Go Army, Beat Navy!
Here we have a character that was one of the 8 made into the super-articulated line. Other than the First Order Stormtrooper, the SA Kylo was probably the hardest The Force Awakens Walmart Black Series figure to find, but even then, it wasn’t really that hard, at least not in my area. So if you could find the SA version, is this one even worth a look?
If you have the SA version, then the answer is probably not. But that’s not to say this is a bad 5POA figure.
The figure does its basic 5POA job well. It stands sturdily, it has a really nice sculpt, and the paint (what little there is) is applied well. The outfit has plenty of texture detail, and the lower robes look fairly natural, even with the vintage-y square-crotch hip articulation. The head looks great, and the silver detailing on the mask is pretty excellent for a budget figure. The head can be popped off, which allows you to remove the shmata, giving you an alternative display look, should you desire. That piece is flat black, as opposed to the more glossy look of the rest of the outfit, giving it a more depth. It’s a nice touch.
The lightsaber with the vents is a nice looking weapons, and Kylo grips it extremely tightly, which is great. It’s one of the more excellently executed weapon grips in the line, for whatever that is worth.
The sample in this gallery was actually the second one released in the line. It’s a repack of an earlier wave, but with a different card image, and included a different build-a-weapon piece. It was a total scam by Hasbro to scam the build-a-weapon completist, as well as the carded completist. I’m neither, so joke’s on you, Hasbro! In any case, the accessory that comes with this Kylo Ren figure is a strange double arm-blade thing. There are two of them, and actually the blade can be separated from the white arm clip piece. Additionally, the white piece has a couple of “fins” attached, that can swivel for the purpose of what, I have no idea. Probably means something to the final 3-part build-a-weapon, but who cares about that? Not me! Therefore, you shouldn’t either. That said, it’s a fairly versatile, if ridiculous, accessory.
It’s a budget figure, so you can’t expect much, but the most obvious ask here would be for an unlit lightsaber hilt, which came with the SA version. Also too much to ask would have been an unmasked alternate head, but Hasbro released a separate figure later in the line with that look, so again - budget figure.
Overall, it’s actually a good looking effort by Hasbro. It does it’s job, and looks nice doing it. I’ll give it a little extra credit just because I’m in a giving mood, and a removable shmata is a definite plus.
