It’s those kooky robots, doing their kooky robot things 30 years later!  This set was your only chance to get C-3PO and R2-D2 in this scale for The Force Awakens.  But what’s with the red arm?  Do you really need this set in your collection?

Let’s start with Threepio.  There’s not a whole lot going on here.  He’s 5POA, he’s not vac-metal, and he has no features.  When I reviewed the TLJ version of C-3PO, I listed all the different features and gimmicks that accompanied this character over the years.  In this line, he pretty much brings nothing exciting to the table, with the possible exception of it being the only one in this scale that has the red arm.  A red arm which was never explained in the movie, and which he apparently gets replaced by/during TLJ.  Beyond that, he’s pretty plain, but he does stand solidly, and he has a nice sculpt for this line.  It’s very similar, although not really identical to the one used for TLJ.  It’s slightly inferior to that one.

R2-D2 is disappointing because the astromech mold used in the 5POA line so far isn’t very pleasing. This is 3POA nad have no middle leg, which restricts display options.  He doesn’t even have the light-up eye which has been an astromech staple for ever.  It’s about as simple a figure as you could expect, which is a shame for this day and age.

The accessory is a shoulder mounted double-barreled missile launcher, complete with a pair of blue ice missiles, each coming with a separate electro effect that attached to the nose.  The launcher fits well enough on R2, but it unfortunately messes with his center of balance.  The only way I could get R2 to stand was to aim the launcher downward, which just looks silly.

The figures themselves aren’t all that awesome, but they basically do what you expect, and look decent on a shelf.  The red arm is probably the reason to get this set, since it’s your only option in this scale for a TFA C-3PO.  The accessory isn’t executed that well.  You know what would have been better?  That hologram of the missing map piece projecting out of R2, like that planetary hologram way back in the R4-G9 “Sneak Peak” Revenge of the Sith figure from 2005. Instead, we get nonsense.

I’m going to give this set a 4, for doing its job.  Average 5POA figures, but the simple articulation is so much worse when on a Jedi or trooper, so I’m not that angry about it.  The silly big accessory just doesn’t give it any real added value.
