This is the second of only two outfits Rey wore in the film. Although the first one had several variations (gloves, head wrap, goggles, X-Wing helmet), all of them could have been handled with a single, well-done, definitive, super-articulated figure. This outfit was worn only at the end of the film, when Rey goes to Ahch-To to find Luke. There’s not much to it, yet Hasbro got a nearly perfect 5POA figure here. It’s only a shame because it’s not super-articulated, but otherwise, it’s excellent.
The sculpt is very good. Although the outfit is simple, in that it doesn’t have a lot of detail (creases, folds, texture, etc.), it is sculpted in such a way that it does the figure justice. The face is well done. The sculpt and paint combo give the figure a pretty and feminine look, even though it’s not exactly a doppelgänger for Daisy Ridley. The eyes are nice, and I think are better than on previous Rey figures. The paint on the body of the figure isn’t bad. Nothing special as far as the applications, a bit sloppy at points, but acceptable. Now, for those that don’t know, I see colors differently than normal. I’m not fully colorblind, but I sometimes have trouble distinguishing or identifying certain colors. So that said, I think the color of the figure’s uniform is way off from what is worn on film. I freely acknowledge that I could be very wrong here, but it just looks significantly different than what it should be. Beyond that, everything looks good.
The articulation is good for this 5POA. The sculpt in no way inhibits movement of the joints as intended, and the head makes use of the ball-jointed neck, which I keep mentioning is something lacking in many of the TFA figures. The figure’s hands are sculpted in such a way that Rey can hold all of her accessories solidly. There’s a surprise with this figure, as the vest is actually removable, and without it, Rey doesn’t look like she’s missing something. Although her forearm wraps are the same color as the vest, I don’t feel they look too out of place with the vest removed. As such, I see this as an alternative display option, albeit for something off screen. It’s a nice, and unexpected, touch.
And here’s a nice way that this figure differs sharply from many other TFA figures: This Rey excels because it comes with 3 movie accessories, as well as a two-part build-a-weapon piece. She comes with the staff that can sling over her shoulder, across her back, or can be held in either hand. Most importantly, she finally comes with Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber. Although she ignited the lightsaber while wearing a different outfit, the hilt is required in order for the figure to achieve the iconic pose of reaching out with it to give it to Luke on Ahch-To. Yes, she can pretty much achieve that iconic pose, even without super-articulation, but you have to grab an unlit saber from another figure, like I did, but then forgot it wasn’t part of the package [thanks, Jimmy Griffin]. It is nevertheless a shame that a really good figure is relegated to the budget line.
Rey comes with some kind of 2-part, rotating staff thing. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the lightsabers used by the Inquisitors in Rebels, but it’s still stupid. Otherwise, Rey can wield it as designed, and it doesn’t stop her from standing straight.
So this figure gets a nice grade. It looks great, has a great sculpt, the surprise feature of the removable cloak, and a bunch of accessories with which she interacts well. My only real complaint is the color of the outfit, but I’m either wrong, or I just have to get past it. I give this a 6, which really is a tremendous score for a 5POA figure. I believe that only TLJ Paige got a higher score, and that was for having a groundbreaking accessory.
