The original release of the TBS375 Scarif Stormtrooper Squad Leader was one of the highlights of otherwise miserable Black Series 3.75” line.  While Hasbro had some difficulty with the name of the character (this was the basic trooper, not the squad leader), everything else was top notch for late 2016.  The sculpt was outstanding, the paint applications accurate and pleasing to the eye, and the articulation solid.  It was here that the figure showed a few signs of weakness.  While it sported all the requisite points of articulation expected at the time, due to the sculpting of the armor and the level of innovation at the time, the elbows and knees didn’t flex as much as 90 degrees, let alone past that point.  Also, the ankles were not of the rocker variety, which had still only seen very limited use to that point in the line’s history.  This made for an incredible looking figure, but one whose posability seemed a little underwhelming.

In 2019, we got this figure repacked on a TVC card as VC133 Scarif Stormtrooper.  This time Hasbro dropped the erroneous “squad leader” designation, and gave us a beautiful cardback image.  The figure itself was essentially identical to the first release, with the exception of there being a slightly different variation to the dirt and grime on the armor.  It was a “smart repack,” as we say, since the Walmart TBS version had been tough to come by, and demand was still strong.  By 2020, the expectations for a great figure had not really changed a whole lot since 2016, so we kept our original Banthaskull grade of 9/10.  In Chris’s review, he finished with the statement:

This is the definitive Scarif Stormtrooper figure.  With this second release, the figure will pull close enough to meeting demand (hopefully).  We don’t need Hasbro to revisit this exact figure, but we need the Captain and Squad Leader variations desperately.

Well, here we are in 2022, and Chris’s conclusion has become reality.  This 4-pack troop builder pack contains 2 straight repacks of the original basic soldier, but we also get two repaints and a new kama accessory so that we now round out this style of trooper with a captain and a squad leader.  The blue and yellow markings on the corresponding chest, abdomen, shoulders and forearm denote the respective ranks, while the captain has a different belt and a new soft goods kama.  Again, as with the TVC release, we get a slight (if not necessarily intentional) variation in the dirt on the armor, to add a little extra differentiation between the different versions.

Buying this set for $42 is a nice deal.  Not only do you get 4 outstanding figures for $10.50 a pop, but we get the oft-requested captain and squad leader.  Buying a couple of these sets will add a lot of depth to your Scarif displays.

While the figure’s articulation limitations would knock this down to an 8 or so, the rank variants and value will keep the set as a 9 overall.
