This is the first Jango Fett figure we’ve gotten in the collector line since VC34 from 2011. It just so happens that Hasbro is in the midst of Mandalorianpalooza. According to my calculations, 78% of TVC figures are of Mandalorian characters, and over half of the other 67% are either clones or stormtroopers. And this is more than triple the amount of Baze Malbus figures we have in TVC. Maths!
At the time, VC34 was a great figure, but it manages to maintain an important place in your modern displays because of it being sourced from Kamino. It included the “claw” vambraces which Jango deployed to slow his decent down the side of his landing platform on Tipoca City (R.I.P.) on Kamino. The figure also includes the Z-6 rocket-firing jetpack as well as his rain poncho. This new release is sourced from Jango’s appearance on Geonosis.
The figure is fantastic. Sure, it’s pretty much a retool of VC243 Mandalorian Super Commando, but it would seem likely Hasbro had Jango in mind when it sculpted that figure. Jango’s got a great sculpt, with top-notch articulation, and a fantastic paint job - especially with the silver armor pieces. As it’s from VC243, it still has the ability to bend at the knees and elbows past 90 degrees, a key aspect of articulation that Hasbro seems to have moved away from recently, for some reason. As this is sourced to Geonosis, the keys are that the jetpack is the JT-12 version, which was the “backup” used after Jango fired the rocket from his Z-6 at Obi-Wan on Kamino, and that the left vambrace is sculpted to accommodate a flamethrower effect. A nitpick here is that the plug of the flame effect that connects to the vambrace is a bit too thin, so the accessory may sag over time.
The helmet is swappable (not wearable), which is an excellent choice. Here is my main gripe with the figure, however. When you remove the head, the dumbbell joint on my sample goes with the head, and is impossible to remove with your fingers. So you have to use pliers or something similar to pull it out, and then use it to accommodate the helmet. Not a huge deal, but definitely inconvenient. I suppose your mileage may vary on this. The headsculpt itself is one we’ve already seen on recent clone figures, although I believe the hairstyle may be specific to Jango. The helmet is well sculpted, has an articulated range finder, and even has a pip on the right cheek - which at first I thought was a fault in the plastic in my sample, but is intentional - and may be screen accurate. Another negative here is that the range of motion of both the head and helmet are fairly limited.
A knock on VC34 was the weird “floating” holsters. Hasbro corrected this silliness, as they lie flat on the hips, as they should. However, they do hinder the full range of motion of the hip joints. The blasters fit snugly in the holsters, as well as naturally in each of Jango’s hands. The JT-12 backpack is a little loose as it fits on the figure’s back. It falls out pretty easily, which can be frustrating. Conversely, the flame effects snap solidly into the thrusters. They’re actually a little tough to connect, and if you’re not careful, you might damage the soft plastic of the narrow base of those thrusters. And one last complaint - the feet are sculpted a bit too realistically, and have an arch near the toes that reduces the surface area of the soles. This can make the figure a bit prone to rocking forward or back as you try to pose. It’s been a common thing in figures over the years. I think Hasbro should focus more on sculpting the figures completely flat-footed, so they stand better.
Without a doubt, this is by far the best Jango Fett Hasbro has ever made. It looks amazing, can be posed well, has great articulation, and includes nice accessories. One may debate whether this is worthy of being priced as part of the deluxe line, but it would be hard to argue it’s not a great figure. At some point, it might be nice if Hasbro tweaked this figure, or at least re-accessorized it, to reflect Jango’s appearance on Kamino. I would love a two pack of such a Jango Fett (with a poncho, Z-6 jetpack, and the claw vambraces) and a new Kid Boba Fett (which is one of the worst figures in the line).
Overall, this figure gets a 9/10 because the very minor (but many) negatives prevent it from getting a perfect score.
