When I asked Mr. Nomadscout if he cared if I photographed this 2-pack, he said that he did not.  Even though this conversation was over text, I could sense that he was smirking.  I knew I was being set up.  I quickly learned there were two things I had forgotten when I volunteered for this duty.  First, 2-packs are 2-packs.  They’re twice as much work as a 1-pack.  I didn’t see that coming.  Second, photographing a white figure against a light gray background is about as stressful as parallel parking a Deuce-and-a-Half in midtown Manhattan during rush hour.  He set me up, but I shall get the last laugh.  I’ve been appointed to the role of Bantha Skull HR, and I’m going to set him up for a full disadulation.

This is the third release in the carded 2-pack expression following the Wicket W. Warrick and Kneesaa set and the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader set.  In this expression, we get two repainted/slightly retooled figures.  For this and the Obi-Wan/Vader set, we also get the privilege of paying an extra $3 per figure.  Hooray for us!  Let’s dive into what this particular 2-pack offers.

VC305 - HK-47

We started calling for a Vintage Collection repack of 2008’s Legacy Collection HK-47 as soon as the return of the Vintage Collection was announced.  We did so in this Top 7 “Never Before On Vintage” Repacks article.  We repeated that sentiment just under four years later with our REPACK REQUEST:  Legacy Collection (Blue) - HK-47 (Build-A-Droid) article. Suffice it to say that we were beating this drum for a while.  So obvious of a repack was this HK-47 that the inexplicable wait for it fueled speculation that Hasbro had lost the Legacy Collection (TLC) tooling assets.  This release hopefully dispels that rumor as it marks the first TLC repack in TVC 2.0 that was not previously repacked in TVC 1.0.

Now here’s the rub.  While this figure was still perfectly viable in 2017 when we first started calling for it’s re-release, it’s really showing it’s age seven years later.  The lack of hinged wrists is highly conspicuous when trying the engage the figure with its included blaster.  Because of the type of grip on the stock, the lack of wrist hinges means this HK-47 is relegated to “shoot from the hip” poses.  Raising the figure’s arm higher results in the barrel of the rifle pointing skyward.  An up-and-down hinge would remedy this.  Additionally, this HK-47 is begging for ball jointed hip and rocker ankles.  Shooting from the hip would be more tolerable if the figure could engage in a shooting crouch, but the swivel hips negate that possibility.

The comparison photo above is a composite as I no longer have the 2008 HK-47.  Just like the cash from George Bailey’s Savings and Loan, my TLC HK-47 is in Randy’s house.  Please note that Randy did not get his mortgage in 1945 Bedford Falls, but this being December, I wanted to make an It’s A Wonderful Life reference.  I tried to exposure and color match the composite as best as possible.  You can see the new version has a much more orange coloration, which feels more accurate to the picture of HK-47 I have in my mind’s eye.  Mr. Nomadscout gave the TLC HK an 8 out of 10 in 2019, but figures have experience a quantum leap in quality over the past four years.  Therefore, I’m lowering this release to a 7 out of 10 (and I toyed with a 6).

VC306 - Jedi Knight Revan

By virtue of the fact that the TBS Darth Revan was re-released as Jedi Knight Revan, TVC following suit was a forgone conclusion.  As they say, as above (6”), so below (3.75”).  Hasbro waited a whole five numbered releases before repurposing the VC301 - Darth Revan as this Jedi Knight Revan.  The transition from the dark to light side is fairly straightforward.  Pick any saber color other than red, ditch the black garments for lighter colors, and patch the holes in your clothes.  In addition to swapping the black garb for an off white and patching the holes in the lower skirt, this Jedi Knight Revan also loses the tattered cape entirely.  The red saber for the Darth Revan release is also gone, and Jedi Knight Revan only comes with the purple saber.

I actually think this Jedi release looks better than the Darth release.  In car lingo, Jedi Knight Revan has cleaner lines.  Without the cape and tattered skit, I feel this figure presents better.  I like it a lot, but as you’d expect, all of the warts from the VC301 sculpt are carried forward.  The biggest of these is the way the plastic molded lower belt interferes with the hip articulation.  That, plus the plastic lower tabard, limit the number of dynamic fighting poses this figure can achieve.  The second concern is the limited range of motion of the elbows due to the shorter pins that are being used in 2023.  It’s still a very good figure, nonetheless.  Even though these sculpt issues prevent all the dynamic poses form bing unlocked, plenty of satisfying poses can still be achieved.  Jedi Knight Revan retains the 8 out of 10 score from the VC301 - Darth Rvan release.

Conclusion

We all know these characters eminate from the Knight of the Old Republic universe, but Hasbro and/or Lucasfilm decided to source the packaging to Galaxy of Heroes.  I have no idea what Galaxy of Heroes is.  I think it’s a game played on an old Coleco Head-to-Head handheld.  All I know is this set has left me wanting more KOTOR figures. I think T3-M4 is going to make it into my Top 25 this March.
