Yesterday we reviewed The Saga Collection Super Battle Droid, which was a repaint made to look like a combatant on Kashyyyk with jungle/beach camouflage. Well, a not terrible move to provide companion pieces to this scene, Hasbro turned out - you guessed it - another repaint! This time, a pair of B1 Battle Droids get the Kashyyyk camo treatment.
The good news is that you get a pair of droids in this two pack, so if you picked up just a few, along with a couple of the SBD’s, you’d have yourself a decent showing for the CIS forces on (imaginary) Kashyyyk. I tried watching the ROTS scene repeatedly, where the droids make their amphibious assault. There is a decent shot of a few battle droids riding into battle standing on the sides of a snail droid, but it’s so fast moving and fleeting that it’s hard to verify if those B1’s sported any kind of specialized paint scheme, or if they were typical tan models seen elsewhere. For the record, I can’t find a shot of any SBD’s on Kashyyyk, but at least the B1’s were definitely there, even if possibly painted differently.
Aside from the camouflage, the battle dorid figure itself is awful. It is 5POA (swivel neck, shoulders and hips). It can barely hold the included blaster, and definitely has no shot at a THWG. You’re lucky if you can get it to stand upright unassisted. Getting both to stand together is a near miracle. Over time, I assume many loose samples require figure stands in order to not topple over. The backpack is removable, and do have the notch that holds the blaster, a feature that devolved and was lost in the TVC version. This is a repaint of the version that first came out in the 2002 SAGA Deluxe C-3PO with Droid Factory Assembly Line!. The head is removable, which ends up working for you here if you want to litter your Kashyyyk beachhead with destroyed droid parts. Kinda neat.
I’m assuming these are just a Hasbro construct, or perhaps they were inspired from some obscure BTS artwork or photo. Nevertheless, they’ll do for some background fodder when setting up your displays of the assault on the Wookiee homeworld. That’s about all they’re worth, as these are pretty terrible action figures. 4/10, and only because of the interesting paint scheme and the fact that they’re a two-pack.
