I can’t fine any actual evidence of this, despite an aggressive 30 second Google search, but I had thought that somewhere along the way I read that this set was based on a scene that was either cut from Attack of the Clones, or at least it was written out in an early draft of the film. The “honeycomb-ish” floor pattern places it in the hidden hangar where Dooku had his Solar Sailor. I recall (or made up) that there was a scene where we see Yoda approaching the lightsaber fight between Dooku, Obi-Wan, and Anakin, before he’s waylaid by a Super Battle Droid (or several). He had to fight through them in order to reach Dooku, which is why he didn’t make it in time to prevent their defeat. Again, I may have made all of that up.
As it is, we have a deluxe figure set that represents nothing specifically from AOTC, however, it still has some value. As mentioned the environment pieces seem to be inspired by Dooku’s hangar area. It “connects” to a piece that comes from the Arena Playset. I put that in quotes because it fits against the piece, rather than literally connecting to it. As such, it qualifies as being yet another set that is interactive with the Arena.
Before we go into more detail on the workings of the environmental pieces, let’s look at the figures. Yoda looks pretty decent, but he’s a terrible action figure. He’s got swivel articulation at the neck and shoulders, aaaand that’s it. The sculpt is good, though, and you get a formidable battle-ready Yoda. He’s got magnets embedded his five-toed feet which interact with the base. Yoda comes with a lightsaber - a nice one with a metal hilt that can be “force attracted” to a magnet in his left hand. He can also grip the lightsaber in his right hand, but either way, he can’t be posed with any real creativity.
The Super Battle Droid is basically junk, so much so that it doesn’t even earn its name in the title of the set. It’s an afterthought, and relegated to the status of an accessory. I still consider it a viable action figure, but Hasbro didn’t think much of it, apparently. It has swivel articulation at the shoulders and hips. The arms are the only effectively posable part of the figure. It comes with a blast effect that emits blaster fire from his right wrist guns, so it actually looks fairly decent, even though it’s a near statue.
The base of the set has a hidden magnet attached to a user controlled arm/lever. This magnet attracts to the base of the Yoda figure, so you can slide Yoda around. The SBD acts as Yoda’s unfortunate foe. There are two ways Yoda can make short work of this guy. You can either push the lever to activate the collapsing crane to crush the SBD, or you can activate the ejector floor panel to flip the SBD onto it’s back. The whole thing actually works reasonably well, although the crane is a bit too sensitive.
While the Yoda is not good, the gimmicky set serves as an additional environmental piece to expand the Arena Set into a part of the hanger bay. The SBD works as background fodder, should you choose to do so. It’s certainly not the best thing Hasbro ever did, but it’s got it’s good points, and is worth considering as an “expansion pack” to your Geonsosis displays. I give it a 5.
