Champs de-throned by 38 points. THE GARDEN was rocking. This will be the Knicks’ first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years. I shed a tear of joy. This was a good day. Sorry to Chris, as the loss of Tatum for what will probably amount to be a sizable chunk of next season is probably worse than the series loss. But he’s got multiple titles as a Celtics fan. I’ve got zero in my lifetime.
C-3PO went through the entire OT wearing a single “outfit.” Sometimes he was dirty, sometimes he was clean, and sometimes he was in pieces. But his gold plating with silver shin was all we knew him by. Then in the PT, he had a different look in each film. He was “naked” in TPM, and while the EP1 figure was merely 5POA, the sculpting and paint were tremendous, and hold up well even by today’s standards. Then Threepio got his coverings for AOTC, which were well worn and scuffed dull silver/gray. The action figures from the AOTC era were pretty poor, and it wasn’t until the TLC Genesis Arena 2-packs that we got an excellent version of this Threepio. Then in ROTS, he has his full shiny golden plating, and it’s magnificent. The Tartakovsky series seems to be of dubious canonicity, but there was a scene where Threepio debuted this gold plating. I don’t recall Filoni doing something similar in TCW, but maybe I missed it.
C-3PO didn’t do much in ROTS, other than fuss around Padmé‘s apartment. My favorite moment was when he tells Padmé that Anakin went to the Jedi Temple, which is on fire in the background. Padmé gets overwhelmed with emotion, and Threepio just dismisses it with, “Oh I’m sure he’ll be alright” and just walks away. This guy! All he does is worry about every little detail through the first 6 movies, but Anakin is going into the Jedi Temple which is under attack and is engulfed in flames, and he can’t even be bothered to try to comfort Padmé. I always knew Threepio was a jerk.
The figure itself has a sculpt that is familiar, but is actually new to the ROTS line. He’s got 6 POA, which includes a ball jointed torso. He stands well (something with which many of the ROTS figures we’ve reviewed up to this point have some difficulty) and has a great resemblance to the character. It’s not groundbreaking, as Hasbro had done several very good C-3PO’s up to this point, and it would take another year or so before we got knee articulation in the TSC figure.
The main draw here is the paint job. True to his ROTS appearance, Threepio is all gold. I believe this is the only version of Threepio like this, as his ROTS look was never revisited. Now, there is an all gold figure based on his appearance in The Last Jedi, but that one lacked vac-metal, and obviously wasn’t intended as a replacement for this figure as it was from a different source.
One other point is that C-3PO comes with a Mustafar themed environmental stand. I don’t recall if there was some cut scene where Threepio was supposed to travel there with Padmé, but there it is. It’s either due to a change from LFL, or Hasbro just goofed. It would have made more sense to get the ship/hallway base. Or even the repainted one that was more of a Tantive III scheme. [EDIT: Yep, as pointed out in the comments a few times, Threepio did fly with Padmé to Mustafar.]
There’s not much else to say about this figure, but it is nice looking, even if the articulation is dated. It just reminds me that we are in need of a new sculpt, and at this point, it appears Threepio will not be Returning to Tatooine, if you know what I mean.
5/10.
