This morning we reviewed the first of these 2 K-Mart exclusive sets. While much celebrated, that set was nothing more than a re-branded version of the second wave of 2002 Saga Walmart Cantina Sets. This pack may be considered what certainly could have been a third wave.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a repack of the POTF2 Flashback version. It wasn’t good even by 2004, but admittedly had a fair amount of articulation (10 points) due to the elbows and wrists. Nevertheless, all of it was of the swivel variety, and the robes negated any possible movement that the hips offered. Hasbro also committed the cardinal sin of pre-posing the figure in an action stance. Finally, it is screen-inaccurate because of the hood. Unlike Obi-Wan’s attack on Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba, this was a swing-and-a-miss by Hasbro. Obviously this figure is utterly useless today.
Ponda Baba is a slight repaint of the same figure that came with the first (and only) wave of Walmart cantina packs. It’s got the hinged knees so it can sit screen-inaccurately on the screen-inaccurate stools, as well as the removable arm (which admittedly was a cool feature). Unlike the Walmart set, this Ponda Baba comes with his blaster, which he can use to help decorate the floor along with his arm. Again, this figure is obsolete today.
Then we get to the star of the set, Zutton. Chris could probably give you a better history lesson here, but here’s the Cliff Notes version: Kenner used a black and white (and incomplete) image as the source for their “Blue Snaggletooth” figure that came with the Sears exclusive Creature Cantina back in the day. The errors in color, height, and uniform were corrected in subsequent releases of the “Snaggletooth” character, leaving the original version to become a rare and expensive collectible. “Snaggletooth”, like so many other set nicknames for the costumes, was eventually dropped and replaced with his in-universe name. Unfortunately, mass confusion in Star Wars media and among fans left everyone confused as to which character/figure/names matched up. There were Zutton, Takeel, and Zutmore. Hasbro first gave us Takeel in a POTF2 cinema scene. Later, they released “Zutton” in the 2001 POTJ line, but he probably should have been called “Zutmore” from the Holiday special. Then we got this “grail” version in a nod to the Kenner mix-up, and he’s called “Zutton”, even though he probably should have just been left as “Blue Snaggletooth.” Later we got an excellent “Zutton” in a TVC 3-pack, so at least they finally got that one right.
This is a kit bash of the set-mate Ponda Baba and the 2001 POTJ Zutton (more like Zutmore). He can sit at the bar and hold his glass. It’s cool that Hasbro released this as a nod the old Kenner days. I know a lot of people would love to see an updated version (or even this version) on a TVC card as a convention exclusive or other limited release to provide collectors with a packaged version of this grail. Maybe some day.
The set included 3 straight bar sections and 9 bar glasses. “Zutton” is the most desirable figure, while the others are essentially crap. But if you put both of these K-Mart sets together, you pretty much have enough real estate to re-create the left and right sides of the bar. Add the curved sections from the TAC figures, and you’re good to go.
