Ha! Fools! You thought you could escape 5POA reviews? Nevah! They will always be a scourge on the hobby, and as such, Banthaskull will continue to ensure that we never forget the evils of these devolved mutants! Look at these pictures. I SAID LOOK AT THEM! Then read the review and be miserable as a community.
R2-Q5
The first figure of this character was released in 2001 in the POTJ line. Obviously we have far superior astromech molds today, and many fans would love to have this droid updated with a more modern sculpt. Personally, I’m fine with the 2001 version, so an update is very far down my list of wants. But Hasbro nevertheless gave us a “new” figure, albeit in the discounted line. It’s a repaint of the R2-D2 sculpt which first debuted in the Rebels line, and then resurfaced in the Rebel Alliance-themed sister pack to this set, which we reviewed not too long ago. Since Hasbro already ported the amazingly good TLJ astromech sculpt into the collector line, I assume they wanted to keep things simple. And crappy. To me, this figure is a step back from 2001, despite the inclusion of a retractable claw.
Scout Trooper
Another nice looking figure, until you try to pose it. Good for background fodder or for standing at attention, and not much else. Despite the fact that we have decent Scout Troopers already, we could definitely use a 2020 upgrade with fully modern articulation and sculpting. In the meantime, this is a nice alternative to…HA! Fooled you! This figure sucks.
Snowtrooper
I was going to cut and paste the Scout Trooper paragraph, and change the name. But I’ll just cut to the chase…This figure sucks.
TIE Fighter Pilot
This figure is a repack of the SOLO Imperial Troopers TIE Fighter Pilot that came in that (HIGHLY FRUSTRATING) trooper multipack. The pack was awesome as far as character selection, but since everything was 5POA, it made many collectors want to Hulk smash the Targets in which they were found. It’s a nice looking figure, but as always, the lack of articulation of a trooper is particularly annoying. I suppose it’s good for an Emperor’s Arrival diorama, if you wanted to go that route, but it pretty much adds nothing to the collecting conversation. The very imperfect TVC figure still manages to crush it, flaws and all.
Stormtrooper Squad Leader
Just like the TIE Pilot, this is a repack of the SOLO Imperial Troopers Stormtrooper Squad Leader figure from the multipack. Since we now have something approaching a definitive Stormtrooper in TVC (we really need ROCKER ANKLES on that bad boy, this one doesn’t add much of anything to your display. We don’t have a pauldron-wearing stormtrooper in TVC, so instead of customizing, you could use this guy in the background. The pre-posed arms are frustrating, but do give a more natural (if unforgiving) look to the character as he stands there.
Set
This set would be pretty great, just like the SOLO trooper pack, if it consisted of super-articulated figures. Alas, it’s just a bunch of plastic nonsense. At best, you got yourself some background fodder, and an R2-Q2 with a claw. Not really worth the $30 in my opinion, but whatever.
