It’s easy to miss Bob Hudsol, but he’s actually on screen quite a bit.  He flanks the screen during the famous brieifing, then later appears in several shots around the Yavin viewing table with Princess Leia and C-3PO.  He’s even somewhat prominent during the Yavin Medal Ceremony, but with his standard issue Longcoat.  During the battle, he wears identical clothes to General Dodonna, but his Purina rank badge is blue instead of Red.  I guess that means he is a lesser rank.

It could be argued that General Dodonna is a much more “needed” figure.  The figure we have only represents his medal ceremony and briefing look.  But Hudsol has captured the imaginations of many fans with his stern face and magnificent mustache.  He’s also had a small number of old EU appearances outside ANH, though in one his hair is inexplicably red, and in another he’s misidentified as Vanden Willard.  For some reason nobody has thought to put him in an episode of Rebels.  Probably because he would immediately overshadow the exceptionally weak male leads of that show.
