Good old Vanden Willard.  So, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Briefing/Control Room scene and the hangar scenes were shot in different times and places.  Thus, none of the extras match.  Vanden Willard was the hangar officer.  He’s the first to greet Princess Leia, and he seems important.  Then he disappears.  He skips the briefing, isn’t around when Leia send Luke off, and doesn’t appear in the celebration or the award ceremony afterward.

As far as figures go, he’s a pretty standard Rebel Officer.  He’s got the classic tan and darker tan coat with the “Purina” rank designation.  But he does have a couple things going for him.  He’s got lines.  He’s named in the script.  He gets to hug Princess Leia.  He’s probably not that high on anyone’s wish list, but he’d be a strong addition to any Yavin or Rebel collection.
