What this guy lacks in a name, he makes up for in screen-time and beard. Like Yavin before it, the Battle of Hoth is accompanied by scenes of a frantic rush to deploy troops, scramble air support, and prepare evacuation. This guy’s task is to load R2-D2 into Luke’s X-Wing. This is an interesting shot because Luke himself is busy lead the counterattack in his snowspeeder, but I guess they didn’t want the audience worrying about R2. When Luke and R2 reunite, his X-Wing is not in the hangar but in a (presumably prearranged) parking space. I like to think this guy was at least partly responsible for coordinating that activity. It does make me wonder how poor Dak was supposed to get off planet if he had survived. Was there an X-Wing waiting for him? Did his ship and astromech get left behind?
There’s does not seem to be a significant difference between the basic hangar techs and the Tauntaun handlers. It looks like a variation on the Deck Officer kit without the rank badge on the vest, and a different hat with no goggles or scarf. This guy seems to have a wired radio attached to the left side of his hat. By itself a tech like this would have limited appeal, but like the Yavin tech packaged with the small transport, this guy would fit really nicely in some kind of multi-pack or special set if they still did that sort of thing.
