The name Shawn Valdez conjures up images of knock-off Columbian coffee, but it’s actually a guy on Hoth. Sort of. The character is portrayed by Boba Fett inventor and Rocketeer director Joe Johnston. He appears in the Rebel hangar and gives some orders about the logistics of the evacuation. The scene is apparently entirely populated by costumed artists who had worked on the film. Eventually this character was given a card by Decipher and named after a young fan who passed away from Leukemia. So, anyone who made fun of this name for not being Star Warsy enough is a huge jerk.
There’s really not much to differentiate Valdez from the fantastic VC68 Rebel Soldier. They both went with the hanging dark scarf look, and at the 3.75” scale they’re faces aren’t going to look much different. It’s possible that their rank badges are different, but it’s tough to tell for sure. On the other hand, that TVC figure was so criminally underserved that nobody would object to a slight variant being released as Valdez.
