My Personal Top 5 “Never Before On Vintage” New Sculpt WIsh List

Posted by Chris on 08/30/17 at 07:03 AM Category: Top 5
My site partner, Mr. Nomadscout, asked me to put together my personal top 5 wishlist for the Vintage Collection for characters that have never appeared on a Kenner styled vintage card. That means these characters were neither part of the original 92 nor have they been featured in the Vintage Collection to this point. It also means that my two most wanted figures are not on this list, but that is a subject for another day. That day being tomorrow. So here is my top 5 "never before on vintage" wishlist:

1. Garindan

Garindan
I've often said that nothing is as exciting in the Vintage Collection as a figure that should have been made in the vintage Kenner days. For A New Hope, there were three figures that, even as a kid, I've always thought were conspicuous in their absence. They were Grand Moff Tarkin, Dr. Evazan, and Garindan. For the first two, my personal demons were exorcised before the Vintage Collection went on hiatus in 2012 (even if the Grand Moff Tarkin figure failed a tad to deliver). Now is the perfect time for Hasbro to finally make up for Kenner's last remaining omission.

I realize I may have lost some of you right off the bat. Not only has Garindan been made in the modern line, but it's been made twice! Furthermore, a lot of fans consider 2006's Saga Collection figure "good enough". That's fine, but this list is about me, dang it. I don't think it's "good enough." That figure lacks any articulation in the legs, features the dreaded swivel elbows, and sports a dated headsculpt. There is ample room for Hasbro to improve on the 2006 rendition. A super-articulated soft goods version would look amazing on a Vintage Collection card. I have a feeling this suggestion is going to anger people as much as when I said realistic Rebels figures do not belong in TVC.

2. Yerka Mig

Yerka Mig
When we compiled the Cantina Patron list for our Uproduced Character Guide, Yerka Mig only placed eigth. That list represents a community effort, and not my personal wish list. Yerka Mig is my most wanted cantina patron. If Hasbro made one, I'd give them a blank check with my name on it and tell then to fill in any number they wanted. As long as that number was less than $25, I would not cancel the check.

This is one of my top five most wanted figures regardless of the "never before" restrictions of this list. In the unproduced character guide, I wrote the justification for making a Yerka Mig figure. I don't want to repeat that argument here, so you'll have to read it over there. Instead I'll work up a new argument. Yerka Mig is a companion piece to figures you already own. At the beginning of the scene, Mig is chewing that fat with Hrcheck Kal Fas (or the other Saurin) and he appears over the shoulder of Takeel when Wuher tosses 3PO and R2. Yes, in a scene filled with exotic creatures, a bland human does not stand out, which is why we rated him so low in our Unproduced Character Guide. But he makes figures that you already own better, and that's a good reason to buy one if made.

3. Darth Malak

Darth Malak
If I didn't lose you with Garindan, I might have lost you now. Another resculpt? Yes, but hang in there. I promise you there's some newness after this.

After Elias defty proved that The Transformers are a gift from God via a crafty linguistic exercise in Clerks 2, he went on to prove that any fan who does not rate The Knights of the Old Republic as the best Star Wars video game of all time is an unmitigated jerk (in a deleted scene). The Black Series 6" Darth Revan figure has returned KOTOR to the collecting community's consciousness, so now is the time to strike in the 3.75" line.

You may be asking, but why would I land on a second rate Darth from that title instead of nominating Darth Revan himself? I'm glad you asked (I assume). The answer is simple: while the TAC Darth Revan figure is far from perfect, it is passable. It would be unfortunate if it were never updated, by my collecting world wouldn't come crashing down. The TAC Darth Malak, on the other hand, is a bit of a dumpster fire. This might be our only shot at fixing that misfire, so I prioritized heavily over Darth Revan.

4. Shasa Tiel

Shasa Tiel
Unlike our Cantina Patron list, my personal wish list aligns perfectly with our Unproduced Character Guide for Jabba's Palace. In that list we ranked Shasa Tiel as the number one priority. You can click through on that link for our reasoning and you'll also get some compelling arguments from guest contributor Binary Son. I do have to mention that Shasa Tiel is my number one priority only in the "never before on vintage" category. She is not my top overall Jabba's Palace priority. That figure was both part of the original Kenner 92 and has been made once in the modern line, but I'll get to it another day. I don't want to yak your ear off about that now.

Simply put, Shasa Tiel is probably the most prominent background alien in Jabba's Palace to have never been made into an action figure. She is clearly visible over Luke's left shoulder as he tries to negotiate a peaceful release of his 87 friends Jabba managed to capture. It could be argued that she features more prominently than Wooof, who has twice been immortalized in plastic. Adding insult to injury, the unnamed Ishi Tib from Home One received a figure in the Freeze Frame era, but not poor Shasa.

5. Vedain

Vedain
Vedain is tied for the second highest priority on the Skiff Guard list in our Unproduced Character Guide. The number one figure on that list also happens to be a member of the original 92, so you might be seeing him another day too. As you well know, there are two skiffs circling the Sarlacc pit during the Battle of the Great Pit of Carkoon. The primary skiff, which holds the heroes, is known as the "prisoner skiff". In an act of utter fanbase laziness, the second skiff is known as the "second skiff". Vedain serves as the pilot of the prisoner skiff.

Hasbro is tantalizingly close to completing the cast of that prisoner skiff. We are only two figures away, and it's torture. The second skiff has its pilot in the admittedly dated Freeze Frame Pote Snitkin figure. It's time for someone to steer the prisoner skiff. Vedain also mixes it up with Lando once the battle ensues, so that should serve as extra motivation to get this figure made. The other skiff guard still needed for the prisoner skiff is Velken Tezeri, but since he is a somewhat boring human character, he wouldn't sell as well as Vedain. So Hasbro, if you could just pack Tezeri with our all newly updated and properly scaled skiff, we'd appreciate it.

Honorable Mentions

As we said in the repack article, we are resisting the urge to make our usual "honorable mention" jokes for this Vintage Collection series. While it's part of our DNA to inject some humor into all of our articles, we're serious about the content (unless stated otherwise). Still, as far as our passion for the hobby goes, we take nothing more seriously than the Vintage Collection, so to make sure the tone of these articles is not misunderstood, we're bypassing the usual goofing around. Instead, we'll use this space to address something from our "Top 5 Products We Don't Want In The Vintage Collection" article. In it, I said I didn't want a new Lobot figure in the Vintage Collection because the vintage Kenner card was so drab. Here's my take on a more compelling card (mostly because of the color palette):

Lobot
