Resistance Bomber Is Not Your Grandfather’s B-Wing

At first glance, the B/SF-17 Heavy Bomber looks fairly derivative of the OT B-Wing.
All we know about the B/SF-17 Heavy Bomber thus far comes from a brief appearance in the teaser trailer and what amounts to little more than a stub page on Wookieepedia. This is sure to change once we get closer to the release of The Last Jedi and accompanying visual guides are released. Nevertheless, at first glance, the ship looks to be fairly similar to the Rebellion's B-Wing fighter. The staff here at Bantha Skull feels that a shared visual language with the OT is a good thing. There should be some commonality in the equipment. The analogy I've made is that a Sherman from WWII and a modern day M1 Abrams are both instantly recognizable as tanks. Things should be different but not too different. That is the camp to which we belong.
But after scanning the box of the LEGO Resistance Bomber, it's clear this is more than just a new B-Wing starfighter. With triple the crew, including a bombardier and an aft gunner, it's evident this ship is supposed to be evocative of the WWII Flying Fortress whose "B-17" designation is not so subtly embedded in the name of this Resistance heavy bomber. I personally love this concept and can't wait to see it in action. I just hope Rian Johnson has written a good reason for a heavy bomber to be operating out of atmosphere (methinks that First Order Dreadnaught might be on the business end).

The mini-figures include a pilot, gunner and bombardier (and Poe for some reason).
