WARNING: This is a plot summary of the short story, spoilers ahead:
Ryland, a Rebel soldier on Yavin IV, tells this story through the lens of a home video he took to record a message for when his infant daughter, Laina, grows up. Ryland's wife was recently murdered at the hands of an Imperial officer, and so he joined the Rebels, taking his daughter with him to Yavin. But news was getting around about the Empire's new space station, and Ryland feared for his daughter's safety should the Empire ever find out about Yavin. So he arranged for two close friends to take Laina away to safety. He knew nobody would have questioned him if he left, but so many Rebels had given up so much, he couldn't leave his post just yet, so he planned to reunite with Laina later. His video message explained who he was to his daughter, and why her parents did the things they did, hoping to inspire Laina to understand how wonderful her mother was and how evil the Empire is. He wanted Laina to know what kind of people her parents were. Of course, he knew it was possible this video would be Laina's only connection to her parent, but Ryland hoped he would one day be able to join her on Alderaan.
