This. This is why the Vintage Collection. Ever since I was a young boy, I played a silver ball I have been all about the vehicles when it comes to Star Wars. Specifically, vehicles with which my action figures can interact, but those action figures need to be able to form a viable display absent of the vehicles. Only the 1:18th scale offers this. Go any larger, and the vehicles become burdensome and monopolize the available display space. Go any smaller, and the figures essentially become accessories and cannot facilitate a meaningful display without the context of the included vehicle. That is why, for Star Wars, 1:18 will always be king. It is the way.
Having said that, if you gave me twenty four hours and four pots of coffee to come up with my exhaustive vehicle wish list for the Vintage Collection, I'm not sure the E-Wing would have even come to mind. After I'd run through the A-listers like Darth Vader's TIE Advanced X1, the Y-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing, and the White Witch, I'd be going for deep cuts like Dengar's Punishing One and Bossk's Hound's Tooth. Heck, I'd drop the Mantis from the current Jedi series of video games before the E-Wing came to mind. So, this was far from a priority for me, but that doesn't mean I'm not happy to get it due to what I said in the first paragraph. I'm a Star Wars vehicle junkie, and this is a Battlestar Galactica Star Wars vehicle.
For whatever reason, the press images didn't convey the true size of this Vintage Collection E-Wing. I guess the dome of an astromech doesn't provide enough context to judge the size. In the reveal video on Hasbro Pulse, you get a much better appreciation of its size, and it's quite big:
That's a pretty good sized ship. I think there was some sticker shock initially with the price, but after seeing how tiny it makes Mr. Reiff look, I'm shocked that it's only $99.99. We all gleefully parted with $132 for Mando's N1, and it feels like we're getting a much bigger chunk of plastic with the E-Wing. But this value appears to come at an expense. As my buddy Tim from Bossk's Bounty pointed out in his reaction video, it's definitely a little too clean. A good wash would do wonders to add depth, and highlight the sculpt. I suspect the deco was held back a bit to chase the price point. If this translates into better than expected sales for the E-Wing, we can expect vehicles to trend in this direction going forward.
Finally, this leads me to KE4-N4. I'm growing a little weary of carded figures being locked behind vehicles. Because KE4-N4 is an homage to Kenner's OG-D2, I'm going to want to keep a second one carded. So how did I punish Hasbro for limiting my access to a carded KE4-N4? By ordering two, of course. That will show 'em! Ah, the joke's on me. The joke's always on me. With respect to Hasbro, I'm like all the annoying Red Sox fans around here who complain day and night about the current ownership, but then sell out Fenway park come July. With that in mind, I'm going to stop complaining about carded pack-ins, as I'm clearly not willing to sacrifice my carded collection to send a message. The good thing is that since the E-Wing is a fleet vehicle, having a second isn't the end of the world.
If you'd like to order an E-Wing or two, there is a limited window to do so. The Vintage Collection E-Wing can preordered through March 5th on Hasbro Pulse HERE. After that, there will be availability in Disney Parks and on Shop Disney (but I wouldn't hold my breath about the latter).
