When I first saw early photos of this set, I thought it looked cool.  Then changed my mind and decided it was a silly scene from a completely non-canon story that was a unnecessary usage of Hasbro resources. Now that I have it in hand, I am mostly impressed, particularly with the crazy cyborg Maul figure.

First, owen.  The head sculpt changed suddenly from early pics.  To me, he looks more like ANH Owen, rather than ROTS Owen.  Perhaps he’s aged a bit too much, but I actually like it.  I think there will be plenty of fans that would have preferred an older look, so that it could pass for a true ANH Owen.  I’m sure at some point, Hasbro will make a new headsculpt, pop it on this figure, and call it a brand new ANH Owen.  Whatevs.  So he’s got a robe that actually fits well.  It’s a lot less bulky than most robes, and is made of a neat burlappy material that seems fitting for the harsh life of a moisture farmer.  Owen comes with his crazy rifle accessory, which he can grip well in his hand.  He’s SA, and ready to protect Luke from any Sith jerks that want to try to harm him.

Then we have Maul.  This figure was a total surprise to me.  I think it’s awesome, even if the character it depicts is rather ridiculous.  Maul’s grown out horns are pretty great.  The face sculpt is a bit odd, but I mean, this guy has obviously been through hell, so a little swelling of the cheeks is something we can forgive.  He is super SA, that is to say he’s got the standard articulation, as well as a ball jointed chest and ball jointed hips.  You can put him in all kinds of ridiculous action poses.  It can be a bit tricky, but due to the extra articulation you can pose him a ton of ways with a little patience.  His paint is excellent.  We’ve seen shirtless Maul’s before, so it’s nothing shocking, but the tattoos really do stand out well.  The only thing that is a shame is that he doesn’t come with the hood/cloak schmatah he is wearing at the beginning of the comic.  He does come with a new curvy-handled double bladed lightsaber.  The blades are removable, but the handle does not split in two.  It never is shown split in the comic, so I don’t know if it’s supposed to do so like his original saber.  He can grip the saber well in one or both hands.

I love this Maul.  I’m sorry, I aplogize, but I do. The Owen isn’t bad either.  It’s a cool set, but if you’re not an EU, or a non-canon, or even Prequel fan, you’ll be fine passing on this.

Thank you to Hunter PR for providing this set for us to review!
