This figure has me stumped a bit. I assume the pilot figures going forward are going to be repaints and kit bashes since Hasbro has built up a decent tooling library. The legs are not from the previous A-Wing pilot mold, but instead are re-used from the current B-Wing pilot mold. The forearms are from 2010’s Admiral Ackbar figure. That’s where the identifiable tools end for me. The head is new and slightly more expressive than the Admiral Ackbar sculpt. As far as the upper body and upper arms, I think they’re new. Please contact us on Facebook if you can identify those parts.
The figure itself is pretty neat. Aside from the occasional Sullustan or Twi’lek, our rebel pilots are human. So this is a nice addition. In somewhat a rarity for A-Wing pilots, the helmet works perfectly for the figure. It has all the modern points and types of articulation, so I don’t know what’s not to like. 9 out of 10.

What’s not to like, indeed! While one may find some nitpicky flaws such as the arms are maybe too long and there is no holster (screen accurate, maybe, but then don’t include a blaster if there’s no place to hold it. What, does he keep it in the glove compartment of his Starfighter? Or maybe under the seat?).
Otherwise, this is a very cool figure, from a deleted scene that, once again, shows a far the line has fallen. While some parts may be re-used, this is, for all intents and purposes, a new figure. Alien Rebel pilots are always welcome, and it is nice to see that Mon Calamari can be Starfighter pilots, and not just crew members on capital ships. Of course, media other than ROTJ inspired several other figures of this species, so Mon Calamari are fairly well represented across the saga, as you can see from the gallery above.
The videos below show the test footage of the Mon Calamari Pilot, who unfortunately was never given a name, and so is unnamed on the TVC card. The second video is a rough cut of he unused extended space battle over Endor.
The figure has a terrific sculpt, a face with personality, and a helmet that fits snugly. There’s not much more to ask for. I suppose this is the definitive version of this character. I concur with the 9.
Verdict: No Action
Definitely no need to revisit this figure. Someday, if Hasbro were feeling Randy, they might consider more multipacks of Rebel pilots, and repainting this as a different pilot would be neat. But I’d rather Hasbro wrk on completing the Yavin Red and Gold Squadron subsets (and astromechs) first. The figure goes for a low to moderate premium on eBay. Pick one up if you like aliens or pilots.
Verdict Guide:
Re-sculpt = The figure is not definitive, and a new version should be developed.
Re-issue = This version is definitive (or close enough), and shows sufficient secondary market demand to warrant a straight repack.
No Action = This release does not require new attention.
