This is a terrific figure, borrowing heavily from earlier molds. The most important thing to do in order to accept the excellence of this Han Solo figure is to realize that Hasbro screwed the pooch on the parenthetical “Yavin Ceremony.” Pretend it’s just a regular A New Hope Han Solo, and it might approach definitive status. I love the head sculpt. It’a a bit large, but if it bothers you, consider it a throwback to the big head Kenner variant. I think the expression on the face is Harrison Ford at his most charming. All the basic points of super-articulation are there, with the notable exception of ball jointed hips, and possibly ball jointed wrists. He’s Han Solo, so he deserves the full treatment for his action figure.
Han comes with his trusty blaster (silver-tipped), which he holds fairly tightly, and it fits snugly in the holster. As a basic (non-Yavin) Han Solo, the only thing that I would complain about in the sculpt is the missing detail of the thigh strap for the holster. It’s been present on previous versions of Han, but Hasbro left it off this one.
So the real problem here, and it’s kind of a big deal, is that while the figure comes with a Yavin medal to wear around his neck, the outfit is wrong. The shirt should be buttoned at the collar and the sleeves rolled down. For a hero character from the OG OT film, it’s kind of ridiculous that Hasbro botched this one. As with many of the figures in this wave, they cheaped out and gave us the wrong figure. Because TVC should represent the best figure possible, and because the card art and parenthetical figure description all point to a different outfit, it’s a big miss for this release. The figure is an outstanding version of Han Solo, but it’s not the Yavin Ceremony figure that was promised. I would give this figure at least an 8, probably even a 9, on it’s own, but as a botched TVC release, I’m going to punch it in the throat and take 2 points. 7/10.
Again, this is a really good Han Solo figure, and you should have at least one in your collection. But if you’re looking for a correct scene-specific Yavin Ceremony, Han, this isn’t it. Hasbro needs to fix the shirt (and the holster thigh strap), and might as well give ball-jointed hips, (but that’s not a must for this version). Ebay values are low to mid, relative to other TVC figures. A resculpt as described is warranted, but I’d put it pretty low on the priority list. You know what figure I’d rather have instead? This one:
