Original Review:  Chris - 11/21/10 08:28 PM

I generally do not support the concept of three consecutive vowels, but I’m going to allow this. I was originally going to deduct a point from this figure because I thought the pants looked too puffy.  It’s another case of the vintage toy clouding my memory.  A check of the actual character’s costume proves that I’m wrong and Hasbro is right.  This is another Vintage Collection figure that nails it.  The face is so lifelike, it’s almost creepy.  9 out of 10 bantha skulls.  The one point deduction is for the helmet which is a little too loose on the figure.

Here’s another masterpiece of a figure.  Just about everything on this figure is perfect, except, as Chris mentioned above, the helmet being a little too loose.  The sculpt is magnificent, especially the face.  Hasbro has completely nailed this species’ facial appearance.  Wooof’s visage is almost mesmerizing.  The figure is imbued with a tremendous amount of personalty.  The outfit is crafted incredibly well, with a lot of depth and texture, right down to the sheepskin-style skirt.  The paint application is darn near perfect.  The articulation is executed well enough that not only does the figure achieve multiple action poses, it does so with the joints fairly well hidden within the sculpt.  The figure can even achieve its “iconic” pose for the character, in the set shot where he’s doing that creepy Thriller move*.  Wooof also includes blaster and vibro-blade accessories with which he interacts perfectly.  He also comes with a removable helmet and bandolier, which add to the display options.

And grizzly ghouls from every tomb, are closing in to seal your doom.

The figure itself is nearly flawless, and I don’t think we an ask for anything better for this character.  Wooof commands a respectable premium on eBay, and with the Khetanna now officially on the way (as of the writing, you still have time to get in on it!), this would be a great candidate for Hasbro to re-release at some point next year to coincide with the Barge’s delivery.

*On a related note, you’ll notice that every character in that shot can be recreated on your shelf with existing figures, except for Shasa Tiel, Jabba’s Ishi Tib accountant.  Yes, the Rodian Beedo has no figure, but he is, for all intents and purposes, identical to Greedo.  Hasbro:  We need a Shasa Tiel.

Updated Review for 2023 Re-release: Bret - 6/12/23. 07:05 AM

A little over 2 years ago, Chris posted THIS plea as part of our “Repack Request” series.  It seems that by the time, the barge had sailed, so to speak.  But fast forward to 2023, and the 40th for ROTJ seemed like a good time to dust off the tooling and re-issue this guy.  Kudos to Hasbro for granting Chris his wish.  Although he is bound by an NDA, I have it on good authority that as an acknowledgement of his specific efforts, Chris received a one-of-a-kind, solid gold 3.75” figure of Wooof, signed by Tom Brady, and hand-delivered by Willie McGinest.  So it just goes to show, sometimes Hasbro can get us the things we want.

I’m super thrilled Wooof was re-issued, because at the time of his initial release in 2010, I had purchased a single figure.  I really hadn’t paid enough attention to realize that Wooof was not only creepin’ on Luke in the palace, but he was also present on the Barge itself.  He’s in a couple of quick shots, and even fired a blaster at Luke on the deck during the melee.  Prices on Ebay were annoying at best, but patience has paid off as Wooof is now available at retail price for a while.

Back in 2010, and then again in 2018, both Chris and I praised this figure as being one of Hasbro’s best, giving it a solid 9/10.  Now in 2023, most 3.75” figures have rocker ankles, ball jointed wrists, barbell hips, and the double neck joints.  So how does Wooof hold up?  Like Tony the Tiger would say, “Great!”  Sure, this doesn’t have the aforementioned modern Jedi-Level articulation, but that doesn’t take away from this guy
much at all.

The sculpt is still incredible, the paint details outstanding, and the accessories and soft goods skirt all come together nearly perfectly - even today.  For a character that lacked a ton of dynamism, the absence of the extreme articulation is okay.  Now if the figure were brand new today, I might feel differently, but there was really no reason for Hasbro to spend valuable tooling dollars on giving this guy any articulation upgrades.

Even still, there are a few minor differences of note, which may make this worthy of a re-purchase, even if you were on the fence.  Most importantly, Hasbro fixed the colors of the knee and ankle joints to match the clothing/boots, which is a nice step up.  Also, if you read Chris’s first review, he said the only real nitpick for him was that the helmet was too loose.  I agree, as my 2010 figure is the same way.  However - and your mileage may vary - the helmet on my 2023 sample is more snug, and fits better without wobbling around.  I also noticed a slight difference in the face paint.  First, the eyes are shinier black, and also the scaley skin seems to be every so slightly feathered in color, so there’s a bit of a light and dark to it that isn’t there on my older sample.  I don’t think the images pick this up, but I would say that there is a bit of a change here.

So an already great figure stays great, and even addresses a couple of the minor flaws from the original release.  I can’t make this figure a 10, but I will keep it as a 9, and that’s impressive for a figure that is old enough to have a Bar Mitzvah.  Don’t pass this guy up, and remember that you need one for the palace and one for the barge, if you don’t already have 2 in your collection.
