Editor’s Note:  This review has been updated with our second look at TVC…

Original Review:  Chris - 11/21/10 04:33 AM

The last time I saw pelt this out of control was when I found my dad’s stash of men’s magazines with ads from an era when men wore plaid pants and drank Dewars in night clubs with couches in them.  Everything was wrong about that.  Is it possible to deduct two full points because of failed execution on the soft goods?  Watch me.  This is a 10 out of 10 figure that was betrayed by some wild fabric.  It can be somewhat corrected with a little elbow grease, but still not perfect. I fully expect a running change to a more sensible skirt.

One of the more popular figures from TVC, the hairy-skirted Gamorrean Guard suffered from one major flaw.  A fabric that featured overly wild fur was used for the lower part of the guard’s uniform.  While this fabric choice was dubious, most collectors (such as myself) accepted this as is, while others used various methods to “shave” the fur down to a more manageable level.  The figure’s sculpt was tremendous, as was the details throughout the leather and metal uniform.  The figure was particularly hefty, and you felt like you got your money’s worth.  The face sculpt stood out as a top notch effort from Hasbro.  As another positive, the figure came with 3 different weapons.

The Gamorrean species isn’t exactly known for athleticism, but these figures are sculpted with articulation that allows for a reasonable, if not overwhelming, level of posability.  The figure is able to execute a proper THWG with the staff, while it can securely wield both axes in either hand.  As an added bonus, the armored helmet is removable.  It fits somewhat loosely, but not annoyingly so.

What can be improved upon?  A better material could be found for the skirt.  The helmet could be a bit tighter.  And since the recent Sixer version had an articulated jaw, it might be neat to see the same with a 3.75” version.  All that said, this figure could basically be considered the definitive Gamorrean Guard.

Limited quantities of the figure can be found on eBay, although last I checked, loose versions were nowhere to be seen.  The carded samples command a respectable premium, although nothing outrageous.  The figure overall is pretty awesome as it is, and while there are a couple of nits, the one hang-up might be with the fur skirt.  If Hasbro could find a more suitable material, it would pretty much make this an imperfect 10 out of 10.  I don’t know if this would be possible while still classifying the figure as a true re-pack, but it really isn’t worth making a whole new sculpt right now.  The interesting thing will be to see if demand for this figure rises over the next year, as it seems the Khetanna is destined to become a reality with less than 5 days to go in the campaign.  As there were at least 3 Gamorreans on board Jabba’s yacht, you’ll want to pick up several more of these guys.  Hasbro could consider timing a re-issue for early to mid-2019.

Hasbro has re-issued this figure, making it available online through “fan channel” outlets.  The price is a bit higher than other basic figures, as it goes for $14.99.  Perhaps this is the 2019 way of Hasbro costing out figures that are more expensive to produce.  Rather than stick them in a regular wave alongside some cheaped out under-articulated / under-accessorized figures, they just sell these separately at a premium.

The most noticeable difference with this re-issue is the back of the card, which has the format of the re-launched TVC figures, rather than those that were from 2010.  The front of the card has some slight cosmetic differences as well, to get it more in line with the current run of TVC cards.

The figure itself, for all intents and purposes, is the same.  If you compare the original and the re-releases side by side, you can maybe glean a few minor differences, but these should be chalked up due to manufacturing differences and the time jump.  The weapons have a stronger paint application of the “wood” elements, while seemingly weaker in the “metal” elements, but it’s generally subtle.  PhotoReal is not applied here, which is too bad because I was hoping it would look more like the actor.  Nah, just kidding. FACE! is not necessary here.  This is basically a straight repack.

Despite the slightly higher costs of the figure, it’s still way cheaper than what the original was going for on eBay prior to this re-issue.  The bottom line is that we needed the Gamorrean Guard to be available again for the Barge and the Palace stuff that are part of the 2019 lineup.  And here it is, as requested.  Complain all you want about the $14.99 price tag, but then stop complaining and just get a few of these.

As of this writing, this re-issue can be purchased via our SPONSOR Entertainment Earth HERE.  It can also be gotten from other sources that are not our sponsor, but that really doesn’t help our bottom line, so you’re on your own there.  (Hint:  It rhymes with Hasbro Shmulse.)
