Wow, this is a tough one.  The first thing that probably jumps out at you from the images above is the number of them.  Typically with super articulated figures, we need a number of photos somewhere in the mid-twenties to express everything that the figure can do and all the ways you can use it.  We were able to do that here with just seventeen images (update: 3 photos added).  Now, the reasons for this are twofold.  The first refers to “the ways you can use it”.  The Range Trooper is involved in one brief part of one scene of one movie. Sure you can use your imagination and place these Range Troopers in every cold weather environment, but that’s your job, not mine.  DO YOUR OWN IMAGININ’!  Because of that, the only proper film-based interaction for this figure is with your Vandor-1 playset that you didn’t buy.

That doesn’t mean collectors are going to ignore this figure.  It looks awesome.  It’s an armored Imperial trooper.  IT WANTS TO KISS SUZY KOLBER!  You simply can’t ignore it.  I can tell you that I’ll probably end up with more of these than I need for my display purposes.  I am powerless against figures such as this.  Cool looking Imperial troopers are a weakness of mine.  Lifebuoy Clone Troopers on the other hand:  Blech! Having said all of that, if you’ve been in the action figure hobby for any period of time, you know that the bulkier the figure, the more difficult it is to pose.  The Vintage Collection Range Trooper is no exception, and that is the second reason for the somewhat truncated gallery.  There are simply not a lot of poses you can achieve.  The upper body isn’t the issue.  The plastic used for the fur collar of the jacket is pliable and easily moves out of the way to allow the arms to move freely.  You can achieve decent THWG (two-handed-weapon-grip) poses.  You can’t achieve any of the Holy Grail THWG poses (something few 3.75” figures can).  For example, you can’t have the figure shoulder the rifle while looking down the sights.  In fact, you can’t achieve a shouldered pose period. Correction:  As pointed out in the comments by JTA interloper, JohnMorog, the figure CAN shoulder the rifle (last three photos added to reflect this).  But I honestly doubt the actors in costume could achieve that poses due to the bulkiness of the design.  It appears the on-screen Range Troopers employ a cross-body, shooting-from-the-hip(ish) aim, which this figure can aptly achieve.

The limitations come from the lower body, and I can’t really fault Hasbro here.  There are simple too many costume elements that interfere with the range of motion.  From the lower half of the cold weather coat, to the codpiece, to the bulky mag boots, there’s too much in the way.  I shouldn’t fault the figure for this in the final grade, but I will.  It’s not Hasbro’s fault.  In fact they pulled out all the stops.  The figure even employs the awesome double-ball-and-socket “barbell” neck articulation, but it’s mostly for naught as other elements of the figure impede this articulation.  This limits the fun factor of the figure.  If the design of the character/figure is going to impact the articulation, it better look good, and this figure does.  The wash over the Namath fur gives it an incredibly lifelike appearance.  That wash continues more subtly over the armored elements. The mag boots are highly detailed and even include a paint app to indicated the red “on” lights as seen in the movie.  The THWG alone makes this a massive upgrade over the 5POA counterpart.  Taking all things together, I have this as an 8 out of 10.  You should buy a couple if you see them.

Update:  Based on the fact that the figure can strike the shouldering pose, the score has been upgraded to a 9 out of 10.
