I initially decided this figure, and the entire “Armor Up” lineup from the TFA line, was ridiculous. I had bought it at the time because the figure was in a different uniform than the pilot version. I hadn’t opened it until just the other day, and was a bit surprised by the figure itself.
The figure is actually pretty good, for 5POA. The sculpt is excellent, with a nice amount of fabric texture and folds. The jacket is a separately sculpted piece, and I believe is actually removable if you were so inclined to “boil and pop” the arms. There are some decent paint applications in the appropriate places, like the shoulder “patch” and a couple of metallic parts on the jacket. The face sculpt is not bad. It’s not a perfect likeness to Oscar Isaac, but it’s acceptable. The face is clean-shaven, versus the 5 o’clock shadow that was present on the pilot figure.
Poe stands sturdily, the articulation points are unhindered, and he holds the rifle securely.
The figure is part of the Armor Up sub-line. What you get is a Hasbro-invented contraption consisting of a helmet/chest armor combo. The thing fits over the figure as designed. It is pretty detailed, made up of several separately sculpted pieces, but ultimately, I thought I was going to break it by detaching the helmet. Not worth it anyway, because the helmet doesn’t appear to be an accurate representation of any that Poe wore on screen. It’s kinda similar to the one he first wore when trying to escape Jakku at the beginning of the film, but not good enough. Also, it has the yellow idiot visor, so why would you want this anyway?
Possibly, this accessory was a lost opportunity by Hasbro to have offered some more creative play value out that maybe could have transformed into something else, like a pressure cooker, a cash register, or a treadmill. Instead, it’s just a weird piece of armor with a non-screen-accurate helmet.
The real problem, is that a $7.99 basic figure came with a $5.00 piece of nonsense. The cost kills this thing, even though the figure is actually pretty good. Price knocks this down to a 3. It’s a terrible value, and the gimmick is just dumb.
