Been there, done that. This is a more expensive, and not as good, version of several other sequel trilogy TIE Fighters, all of which carry the exact same name on the box of “First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter.” There are only minor differences between the three, so after this review you should have all of the information necessary to choose which one you want, if you felt any of them were worth your hard-earned coin.
This is the second use of the sculpt, and like the first, are from The Force Awakens line. It is identical from that version except for 4 things: (1) It is a Toys R Us Exlusive; (2) it was slightly more expensive at original retail; (3) it has Jakku dust painted on the wings; (4) the pilot has a pair of red vertical striped on the helmet and faceplate. That’s it. So if you like your TIE fighters dusty, this may be the one you are looking for. The pilot markings are unremarkable, but enough to make you mad if you’re a figure completist. The biggest problem here, like the other releases, is the retro-styled small wings, and the fact that they are made out of very soft, bendy plastic. These will warp over time, so beware.
For the record, this mold was re-used for The Last Jedi line. The only difference between that one and the previously mentioned TFA wide release, was the inclusion of the Force Link chip, along with the requisite tiny blue Force Link logo on the bottom of the hull of the ship.
So if you want a weirdly dusty, small-winged First Order TIE fighter at a marked up price, pick this one up.
BUT…check your Toys R Us. Mileage may vary, but I just pulled a BIGJIM and managed to find this at my local TRU only a couple of weeks ago at a heavily discounted price of $10.99. I hadn’t picked one up at full price at the time, so I was happy to grab this. To me, this is a great price for a good looking TIE, shortcomings and all.
