This was actually my first figure based on a character as depicted in Star Wars: Rebels.  I managed to find him on HTS long after release.  I had realized fairly late that I had missed him at retail.

The reason I picked him up was because he was missing from my world-renowned 501st focus collection.  I wasn’t a fan of his cartoony 5POA sculpt, but that was irrelevant.  He was 501st, and he needed to join the ranks in my proud display.  At the time, I hadn’t seen Rebels yet, nor had I finished watching The Clone Wars.  Even binging both shows, I had grown to really enjoy the character, and was legitimately excited when he returned in Rebels.  Although that moment was somewhat spoiled for me with the release of the figure, I might have found even more enjoyment that Gregor had also survived.  That was one of my favorite TCW episodes/arcs, and was bummed out when Gregor sacrificed himself, or so I thought!  Anyway, this is about Rex, so please stop droning on about Gregor.

This figure is an excellent plastic translation of Rex’s appearance in Rebels.  Ol’ Rex put on a few pounds in the years since he dodged that whole nasty Order 66 business and retired to the lovely planet of Seelos with his buddies Gregor and Wolff.  Rex has further customized his armor, much of which he still wears around the AT-TE house like it’s a set of footy pajamas with a butt flap.  He also has his Phase 2 bucket, which he was known to fill with popcorn or tortilla chips while watching JFL games.  (That’s Jawa Football League for the uninformed.)

Rex’s face is now bearded, so anyone who appreciates facial hair must buy this figure. He might be the closest thing to Bob Hudsol this side of Jan Dodonna.  He’s got a face that seems to be both gentle and tough at the same time, kind of like Fezzik.  It actually reminds me a bit of Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.  Rex’s phase 2 helmet is decently painted, and fits easily over his noggin.  His five points of articulation work pretty well, although, as usual with these figures, the ball jointed neck isn’t as mobile as it should be. The dual pistols fit snugly in the holsters, and Rex holds one firmly in his right hand, and the other possibly a bit loosely in his left hand.

Rex also comes with a giant flaming javelin spear thing.  It’s ridiculous, but I feel this might be something he would use for sport on Seelos.  Rex would carry that spear as he tiptoed across the bleak landscape, telling Wolff and Gregor to be vewy, vewy quiet, he was hunting joopas.  The only thing I don’t like about the figure is the dirt wash on the boots.  I’ll just pretend it’s from stepping into the droppings of a terrified and soon-to-be-dead joopa.

It’s a nice figure, but I have an affinity for Rex, so I’m going to give it an admittedly inflated score of 5.  I make the rules!
