A slightly incongruous matching, this 3 figure set in the 2-pack format gives you your first (and least expensive) opportunity to add BB-8 to your collection in the one true scale. It also contains two alien characters from two different scenes on Jakku. What they share in common is that they both attempted to capture BB-8. Teedo, the little scavenger, had BB-8 tangled in his net when Rey happened upon him and his luggabeast. After freeing/meeting BB-8, Rey was later accosted by a couple of Unkar Plutt’s thugs in Niima Outpost, one of whom is a part of this set. Due to the small stature of BB-8 and Teedo, Hasbro decided to turn this into a 3-pack, as they did for the TLJ Rose (Imperial Disguise) / BB-8 / BB-9E set.
If you were big into the TFA line, you quickly realized that this set was the best way to get BB-8. He was also available as a pack-in with the Millennium Falcon Nerf abomination, which retailed for $139.99. Or you could have picked him up in the weird Kohl’s Forest multi-pack, or the possibly not terrible Takodana Encounter multi-pack, with Maz Kanata. This version of BB-8 is cute. He doesn’t do much other than look adorable. His head can pivot around the top of his body, so technically this figure is 1POA. He has a peghole at the bottom of his body. Beyond that, he is what he his. No other features are included. He doesn’t roll, and he doesn’t have any tools or arms that pop out. No “thumbs up” lighter from this guy. Probably can’t expect more from the budget line, but whatever.
Teedo is small in stature. He reminds me of a cross between an Aleena and a Tusken Raider. His 5POA articulation is executed well, and he has a full range of motion including the ball jointed head. The paint applications are acceptable. The body sculpt has plenty of texture, as the character is wrapped in bandages all around. He’s got some silly shoes, though. It would have been better if his harness and bandolier were sculpted separately, but this is a budget figure. The head is covered with an interesting mask/helmet apparatus. He comes with a very long staff, which he can grip well. Not a bad 5POA figure. Too bad he doesn’t have a luggabeast to ride on. That would have been a neat toy from Hasbro. Probably more appealing than the rathtar.
Unkar’s Thug also looks a bit like a Tusken Raider. Apparently that’s the go to look for desert dwelling jerks across the galaxy. The figure isn’t particularly exciting, but it does the job for the most part. More drabness from the TFA color palette, but that’s not Hasbro’s fault. The leg articulation is weak, as you can see the figure barely sits. So many of these 5POA figures have wonky or almost non-existent leg articulation, it’s a sham. The textures and fabric sculpting on the figure are pretty well done. Again, a separately molded coat would have gone a long way to bringing this figure to life. The goggles and mask are sculpted well, and the head makes decent use of the neck articulation. The figure can grip the small pistol tightly.
In addition to the 2 figures, you get a tiny net attached to a pair of bright red missiles, which launch from what might be the worst missile launcher in recent memory. The thing is a bizarre design. I’m not sure if it was inspired by anything on screen, but neither character can interact with it in any kind of meaningful way. Presumably, the idea is to launch the missile pair in such a way that the net can capture BB-8. It’s all terrible. I was hoping that the net might interact in some way with Rey’s Speeder, in place of the sculpted net, but after opening this package and seeing the woeful attempt by Hasbro at creating an awesomely interactive and fun net, it’s a fail.
The set is okay, for the price of 2 figures. You get your BB-8, and two background aliens from Jakku. I’ll give it a 5, because it’s BB-8 and there are no old white guys. But it isn’t the most inspiring offering we’ve seen.
