[You’re safe from The Last Jedi spoilers!]

We reviewed the newly released TLJ Luke and Rey earlier this week just before the film was released, and I was going to do General Leia Organa next, but I decided to save the next TLJ figures until Monday, because it would be impossible to review the figure without spoilers now that the movie is out.  So, we’ll go back to The Force Awakens for the moment, and a look at this Takodana-themed 4 pack.

If you hadn’t bought any of the basic carded TFA figures, this set is a good deal, even at retail.  You get 4 figures for $6.25 each, including one not available anywhere else.  While Rey and Finn were otherwise yawners, there’s nothing wrong with them being included in this pack.  Sure, FN “TRAITOR!” 2199 would have been better, or maybe an alien or two from the castle, but you’d be asking the impossible.

Finn is a straight up repack of the basic figure.  It’s not terrible, it’s just terribly boring.  And he’s got that hole in his back, for even less justification here because he doesn’t come with a build-a-weapon part that inserts into his spine.  Plus, real collectors would already have purchased the SA version.  Nothing to see here.  Move along, move along.

Rey is also a straight repack of the basic figure.  There is a noticeable difference in the paint that was applied to the face.  The eyes and lips I think are better on this figure, but certainly nothing that is going to make you buy this set.  Nothing to see here.  Move along, move along.

BB-8 isn’t a terrible addition to the set, because he wasn’t available anywhere at a basic figure price.  You’d be looking to pay double to get this figure with the Unkar Thug / Jakku Scavenger pack.  And worse, you’d have to shell out a pretty penny to get the one that came with the horrible Millennium Falcon.  I have heard that version has some slight advantages over this one, but I can’t confirm that myself.  As it is, this BB-8 also appears to be a straight repack from the one that came in the 2-pack format.  Nothing to see here.  Move along, move along.

That brings us to Maz Kanata.  Not only is she the star of this set (which isn’t really much of an accomplishment) but she might be one of the best figures in the TFA line.  She may be small, and she may only be 5POA, but the sculpt, detailing, and paint are pretty damned good.  Maz has all kinds of personality.  The goggles are done to perfection, and really should make Hasbro feel even more shameful that they released most of the pilots in the line with idiot visors.  This is how it’s done.  The goggles bring out the nearly flawless eyes, and the face sculpt is amazing - a perfect replica of the character.  The sculpt is tremendous, with a lot of fabric details and folds molded into the clothing,  Hasbro really went all out on painting this little figure.  I’m terrible at this, but I count at least 9 different colors used on Maz.  It’s a work of art for any figure in this scale, let alone of a character that is of such a small stature.  Maz can grip her pistol tightly.  It is only unfortunate that she doesn’t have a holster, but I won’t kill Hasbro for that.

The other nice part of this set is the inclusion of the small chest that concealed Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber.  It is also well crafted, with a nice little latch to keep it closed.  The only bummer is that the plastic is soft enough that the lid warps easily.  But it is a really nice accessory, and sure beats the heck out of a build-a-weapon part.

Given that this is 5POA, I would still give max a 6 or maybe even a 7 on its own.  If you can find this set at discount, it may be worth the price just for this figure and the chest.  The BB-8 is nice to have, but the other figures are dull and you most likely had plenty of opportunity to own them in either 5POA of SA versions prior to this set being released.

Overall, I’ll give it a 5.  A terrific Maz figure as well as the value, even at retail, are strong selling points, and outweigh the ho hum inclusion of Rey and Finn.
