I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to recognize Christmas morning than by reviewing the 5POA Kylo Ren in Rogue One packaging.  Nothing represents the season of giving like a magic swordsman dressed in black that uses his special powers to murder his father, overthrow his boss, and take over as Supreme Leader of an oppressive galactic military power.

Just like the Rey (Jakku) character, Hasbro seemed intent on issuing several versions of Kylo Ren that would cover the slight (albeit, important) differences in his on screen appearances.  This figure appears to use the body from the second basic carded TFA version of unmasked Kylo.  Between this figure, the two TFA basic figures, and even the TFA Armor Up version, you can have a masked Kylo with or without his shmata, or a masked or unmasked Kylo, possibly with (I haven’t tried it) or without a shmata.  There are two different body types, neutral and slight action.  Again, as with Rey, it would be nice if Hasbro would release a single (super-articulated) figure that has enough parts to display as any of these versions.

I actually like this figure, despite the crappy 5POA.  It’s got a nice sculpt, a slightly non-neutral stance that works well.  The figure stands solidly, has a nice sculpt with robes that contain lots of folds and texture, and simple but sharp paint applications.  If you leave the shmata on the figure, it looks great, but very similar to the first masked version from TFA.  However, if you ditch the shmata, you are left with a really nice looking masked figure.  Of note, the silver paint details on the mask are impressively applied.

Kylo grips his crazy lightsaber well, it’s just a shame you can’t do much in the posability category, but we know this already.  He comes with a very strange accessory that looks suspiciously like a leaf blower.  I guess Kylo Ren is concerned about ensuring that his lawn is tidy.  The accessory simply makes no sense, but whatever.

In the end, it’s a nicely sculpted figure that looks pretty good.  Because it’s the holidays, I’ll be generous and give it an above average score for 5POA, so it gets a 5.  You might consider this the best 5POA version of the figure, and if you aren’t fond of the soft goods on the super-articulated version, you might add this one to your collection.  But it also could be worth picking up if you want to use the head, sans shmata, and pop it on the SA version.
