Here’s Kanan Jarrus - again! Well, sort of. After something like 5 releases of the same Kanan figure in his basic outfit, Hasbro finally produced a version of the character in a different outfit, and it seems like they did a great job, cartoony 5POA sculpt notwithstanding. Or maybe it is withstanding, or not standing with. Or something.
Kanan disguised himself in stormtrooper armor twice so far during the Rebels series. Incredibly, this figure can represent both episodes. In the second season premiere “The Siege of Lothal”, Kanan dons the armor and orange pauldron in order to infiltrate a base on Lothal as part of a plan to help Minister Tua defect from the Empire. The figure is likely intended to reflect this appearance, but due to the removable pauldron, the figure can also serve as a representation of Kanan’s second stint disguised as a stormtrooper. In the third season episode, “Through Imperial Eyes”, Kanan and Rex infiltrate Thrawn’s flagship Chimaera in an attempt to extract the Imperial-turned-Rebel spy, Kallus.
At first, the figure seems to be pretty standard fare, but it excels, insofar as such a figure can excel. The stormtrooper armor sculpt is true to the source material. The helmet is removable, and fits nicely over Kanan’s head. The head sculpt is also accurate to the cartoon, and Hasbro did a nice job in capturing Kanan’s determined expression much more appropriately done than with the face from Kanan’s TFA basic release. The figure comes with a few accessories which really add value and playability. Besides the removable helmet, the figure also has the aforementioned removable paultdron. These accessories allow you to display a Stormtrooper officer, a grunt, or Kanan disguised as either.
Kanan comes with a stormtrooper blaster, which fits tightly in his hand. The only downside here is that he has no holster to keep it stowed away. The last screen-accurate accessory is Kanan’s lightsaber. In a little bit of a shoutout to Ralph MacQuarrie, it’s pretty cool to see a stormtrooper with the elegant weapon of a Jedi, from a more civilized time.
Finally, Kanan comes with what may be the most ridiculous kiddie accessory to date. This is a complete weapon, and even the nonsensical build-a-weapon pieces were better than this. Out of the package, it looked like it was going to be a physical manifestation of a Force power, like some of the Jedi figures from the Blue Saga (AOTC) line came with. The translucent blue disc is a projectile that inserts into the two-part launcher. Kanan can kinda-sorta hold the launcher, although it’s clumsy looking, at best. The launch mechanism is among the weaker ones you’ll ever see. It’s not spring loaded - you actually push a plastic thing forward, which, in turn, pushes the blue disc out of the weapon. The more force you apply, the farther it will go, with a limit of about 4 or 5 inches. It’s awful, and should be destroyed immediately upon removal from the package.
Kiddie accessory aside, this figure does its job well. The inclusion of several accessories expands this figure’s display options mightily. A well crafted figure, with the obvious disappointment that it is not realistically-styled and super-articulated. It gets a decent 4.
