Here’s a Jyn Erso iteration that you knew was coming once the generic Imperial Ground Crew figure was released in the initial Rogue One line wave. Is it awesome? Must you own it? Will the Giants win a single game this year?
To start, we have a 5POA that does its job. The uniform is sculpted with a nice bit of texture, as well as the necessary folds and creases. The jumpsuit and chest armor both have a few bits of paint detail to bring some depth to an otherwise dark figure. The facial sculpt doesn’t have a particular likeness to Felicity Jones, but it’s still decent. The paint could be sharper. The hairline is definitely weak, with some missed areas that hurt the figure’s overall success. The removable helmet is a soft, malleable plastic, and fits nicely over the head. It is not weirdly sized, like many removable trooper helmets to date. In a side by side comparison with the generic crew member, the helmets are nearly identical, which is a good thing. The marshaling wands are nicely executed, and might even slide into the clips on the back a bit easier than on the generic version. Other than the face and helmet, the only real difference with the figure is the fingerless gloves and boots are a brownish color, instead of black. I’m not sure which color, if either, is completely screen accurate. I assume the black is standard Imperial issue, while the brown is what Jyn was wearing when she disguised herself. The figure comes with a Hasbro special, a crazy shoulder-fired launcher, complete with another weird ice missile. (The Wonder Twins are getting a lot of love in this line…). The good news, if you care, is that Jyn can pose with the missile without falling over, despite its awkward size and shape.
The figure has two faults: Like the generic crew member, Jyn has a silver date stamp located on the jumpsuit in plain sight on the back of her thigh. This stands out and ruins the aesthetic of the figure. Also, for complete screen accuracy, the helmet should have an open visor, which you can see in this screen grab. As one of our forum members had pointed out at the time this image went public as part of one of the Rogue One trailers, Jyn kind of looks like she’s trick or treating in costume, but having the open visor would have been more screen accurate, and Hasbro missed this opportunity when they created the loose helmet sculpt for this figure.
Overall, it’s a decent looking figure, which definitely harkens back to the Death Star Gunners from the OT. The removable helmet effectively makes this figure a two-in-one purchase. It is also unlikely that Hasbro will issue this in super-articulated form, so consider it if you are looking to flesh out your Scarif scene. Ideally, we’d get a Cassian in Imperial Officer disguise, which was another easy miss by Hasbro is this underrepresented line.
The OT inspiration and accessories make this a bit better than the standard generic Imperial Ground Crew figure.
