Finn, along with Han and Leia, are known as The Legion of Doom among fans of the super articulated line. Well, I pretty much just made that up, but you’ll agree that the trio more or less ground the collector line to a halt. And maybe I should qualify that first sentence, since I don’t know of too many people that are actually fans of the current Walmart Black Series line itself. We’re fans of well made collector-grade figures, but not of Walmart, nor of the 3.75” Black Series line that seems (seemed?) almost purposely designed to destroy itself.
The SA version of Finn (Jakku) is a solid, perhaps even excellent, figure. It suffers from a lack of interesting accessories, and to a higher degree, overexposure at retail. Walk into any Walmart now, and you will find no shortage of the Black Series Finn (Jakku).
That figure also may have suffered a bit because of the existence of this 5POA figure, which debuted, what, almost 6 months before the SA version? This one certainly wasn’t rare, but you can’t find it in stores any more. Maybe the public got its fill of this character in this outfit by the time the Black Series figure was released.
Looking at the comparison pic, you can argue that this 5POA figure has some possible advantages over the SA one. The hips are more natural looking, and it doesn’t have he silly Jakku dust on the pants. That said, it’s still 5POA, but it does its job well. It stands solidly, holds the weapon tightly, and has a decent sculpt as well as good paint applications. The separately molded jacket is a plus, on par with the collector version. The face is not bad, although it no more or less resembles John Boyega than the SA face. The figure has a slightly non-neutral stance, which I could do without, but isn’t as bad on an individual character as it is on a troop builder.
The build-a-weapon part is absurd. It serves no real value to this figure, but Finn might be able to trade it in for a half portion.
It’s a fairly standard 5POA offering. But I can’t help but suspect its complicity in the Black Series debacle. Thankfully, we’ll soon be able to move on from that, and leave Walmart to deal with the ashes of its ill-conceived venture.
[EDIT: As Randy pointed out, I forgot to account for the hole in the figure’s back. It’s meant to accommodate the nonsense backpack thing. Figure goes from a 4 to a 3.]
