Concluding our 3-part figure gallery and review arc featuring figures from The Legacy Collection Wave 2 that were sourced from the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars Microseries, we are featuring the Clone SCUBA Trooper. While former senator (now Separatist) Tikkes stewed about the absence in the line of his Hasbro action figure, he decided to take his Quarren Isolation League and its droid armies and attack the Mon Calamari council. The Republic intervened, sending a large force of Acclimator-class assault ships to the planet of Mon Calamari (now officially Mon Cala). Jedi Master Kit Fisto led the assault, by diving into the ocean ahead of a large specialized unit of Clone SCUBA Troopers. The equipment of these troopers included a jet pack for underwater propulsion, and modified DC-15 blaster rifles. Fisto and the SCUBA troopers were making short work of the initial wave of attacking droids, until heavier Separatist reinforcements arrived. At that point, Mon Calamari knights, riding on large eel-like Keelkana, joined the fray and helped level the playing field as the battle waged on. Eventually, the combined Republic and Mon Calamari forces defeated the Separatists. In conclusion, if Hasbro had just made an action figure of Tikkes, perhaps this battle wouldn’t have been necessary.
The Scuba Trooper was first introduced as a Phase 1 trooper in the Microseries, and was immediately latched onto by fans of the series as an awesome new version of the clone trooper. When the Filoni CGI series came around, there was a 3-part story arc featuring the Battle of Mon Cala, which essentially rendered the microseries version nearly obsolete by depicting the battle in a completely different fashion. Filoni himself had once described such discrepancies as merely different points of view of the same events. I guess if you’re into some retconning, you could go with that explanation, as if events were told from two different perspectives. Nevertheless, in the CGI version, Anakin, Ahsoka, Padmé, Ackbar, and Jar Jar were present along with Kit Fisto. The Gungans were sent into battle at one point to help save the day. The civil war revolved around a young Mon Calamari’s ascendancy to the throne being rejected by the Quarren after his father, the king, was murdered. After the war was waged, it was revealed that the Separatist Leader, the shark-like Tamson Riff, had actually murdered the King and was promised the throne. This was to the dismay of the Quarren, who eventually rethought their lives and joined up with the other factions to help reject the Separatists. When the bubbles settled, the Microseries was rendered non-canon, so the differences became officially irrelevant, even if many fans still cherish the Tartakovsky storylines.
This figure is one of three in this wave alone that are sourced to the Tartakovsky version of the Battle of Mon Cala(mari). There is also the shirtless Kit Fisto from the Clone Wars sub set of the 2003 Saga line. Together, these figures allow you to give a nice little setup of the battle. The SCUBA figure was one of the best figures ever made by Hasbro when it debuted in 2008. While it isn’t quite as amazing by 2019 standards, it is still pretty great. The clone sculpt is unique, with specialized armor all over the body, including sporting fins on the forearms and calves. The helmet has twin hoses attached, which can be connected to the removable jet pack. The articulation is excellent, with standard SA for the time, but upgraded with the presence of a ball jointed torso. One drawback is the slightly wider than necessary stance, but you can pose the figure in any number of action poses.
The paint applications are quite striking. The helmet is mostly black, with the face mask and top fin white, allowing for the familiar look of the black visor. The rest of the figure is white, but there is less of it than a typical trooper, which exposes more of the black body glove. The paint is applied pretty well. For accessories, there is the aforementioned removable jet pack. Painted on the rockets is an awesome “tampo” of the keelkana. This is cool because, while it is highly unlikely Hasbro will ever make a keelkana toy, at least there is a depiction of one painted onto a figure. It’s a very cool feature, but it cannot be overlooked that this isn’t actually accurate to the SCUBA troopers seen on screen. Those troopers had plain white jet packs, as they might actually have been unfamiliar with keelkana at the time of the battle. Perhaps the SCUBA unit adopted that artwork as the official mascot after the battle. The figure can grip the long blaster rifle in his hand, and can come close to a proper THWG. This is only made slightly difficult by the large nature of the barrel of the rifle coupled with the tight grip of the left hand. You can coax it into a THWG if you try.
Finally, the figure comes with a pair of removable flippers. This finishes off the underwater gear, and along with the excellent articulation, allow you to position the figure in various swimming poses. Unlike the previously reviewed Mon Calamari Warrior and Quarren Soldier, the ball jointed head and waist allow the figure to look forward while “swimming”, so it’s very convincing. Since the flippers are removable, this trooper is also capable of fighting on land, in more traditional action poses.
As mentioned, this is one of the better figures Hasbro had made by 2008, and still is pretty special even for today. The articulation, paint, accessories, and source material all make this a desirable figure. Even if you’re not into the microseries, you can certainly fit this figure into your GAR displays. I took a few photos of this trooper with the Republic Assault Submarine, from the (poorly executed) TPM3D line in 2012. The figure that came packed with the submarine was a Phase 2 TCW Animated Clone (as they were in the CGI series), so I just tossed that aside and replaced it with this much more awesome realistically-styled version. Screw those cartoony cartoon figures and their associated nonsense and noise!
I give this figure a 9, which maybe is a little too generous, but it checks all the boxes for a collector grade figure, and then some. Plus it’s from a source that I personally love, so it gets a 9. So what, wanna fight about it?
