With this Greef Karga figure, we come to end of our Retro Collection Mandalorian reviews, and for that I am thankful.  I’m not saying that as an indictment of the Retro Collection, but as a reviewer / content provider.  Themed waves are great for us as collectors, but it’s hard to stay inspired to create content through seven consecutive similar reviews.  It’s hard to not start repeating yourself.  It’s hard to not start repeating yourself.  There’s only so many ways ones can comment on a figure’s retro-ness.  For that reason, I’m happy to move on to a new source starting tomorrow (and boy is it a doozie).

This Greef Karga is interesting in terms of sourcing in the context of the larger wave.  Excluding the Retro Collection Remnant Stormtrooper that is only available in the $50 Special Edition Monopoly set (that’s plain mean, Hasbro), this wave consists of seven figures.  Three are sourced to both seasons 1 and 2. Three are sourced to season 1.  This Greef is strictly sourced to season 2, which is puzzling because he only appeared in once episode.  The only figures that he interacts with from that episode are Cara Dune and The Child.  Again, for those of us who grew up during the vintage Kenner era, choosing specificly sourced for our figures was a luxury. Using a season 1 Mandalorian to interact with a season 2 Karga does fit that retro pattern.  Having said that, it feels like a season 1 Karga would have made a lot more sense, and it would have been less expensive since it wouldn’t require a vinyl cape.

Okay, so for the final time for this wave, let’s go over this Retro Collection Greef Karga’s “retro” bonafides:

  • The head sculpt bears absolutely zero resemblance to Carl Weathers. ✅
  • Sculpted non-functioning holster including the clasp loop which is reminiscent of the vintage Han Hoth figure. ✅
  • Fine magisterial robes replaced by a crude vinyl cape. ✅
  • Incorrectly colored brown oven mitts in place of the on-screen gloves. ✅

The only thing that feels a little “extra” to me is the gray goatee.  I know we don’t have an example of this from the vintage Kenner line where a character had mismatched facial and head hair, so there is no comp to point out, but I have a hard time envisioning Kenner going this extra mile.  I feel they would have gone with gray throughout.  Still it’s close to striking the perfect retro vibe, and should blend in with your vintage Kenner figures.

There is folks, the Mandalorian Retro wave is a wrap.
