Get to the Gunship

The year was 1985. Back to the Future was burning up the box office.  Money for Nothing was dominating MTV and our boom boxes. Diane leaves Frasier at the altar and returns to Cheers on…well…Cheers.  And Hasbro delivered us VC269 - Hunter which was the first ever Bad Batch figure.  Today we finally have a second with this Crosshair.  Of course I’m hyperbolizing.  Hunter wasn’t released forty years ago.  It just feels that way.  In reality, these two figures are two years apart, but it’s been torturous.  The Bad Batchers are figures that are essentially worthless without the context of the other members of the team. So while this wait has been frustrating, especially when the Black Series got the entire team (plus) in one year,  it is also a time to celebrate that this Crosshair allows Hunter to break free of the “no companion piece” club.  VC155 - Knight of Ren and VC346 - Dedra Meero are suddenly very lonely.

This is a retool of the aforementioned Hunter figure which dates from 2023.  That is new enough that it has all the bells and whistles of modern articulation which includes barbell hips and rocker ankles, but predates some recent scourges such as the long thighs and shallow elbow discs.  You could say the base sculpt is sourced from the golden age of TVC, and thus this Crosshair hails from good stock.  In fact, I had Hunter as #9 on my Top 10 of 2023 list, and the only reason it was that low was the lack of companion pieces.  Therefore, I largely knew what to expect with this figure (the mostly good, and the small detractors).  All of the articulation functions freely and with good range of motion to include elbows that bend beyond ninety degrees.

Despite knowing that this was essentially a state of the art figure, I knew I was going to get frustrated posing it, and I did to a degree.  But that’s not a fault of the sculpt in and of itself.  Crosshair, as the team sniper, obviously has a very long rifle.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a figure, regardless of scale, interact naturally with long guns.  They almost always hold the weapon across the body and/or tuck the stock under the arm instead of shouldering it.  It drives me crazy.  So I was determined to try to get this Crosshair into a somewhat natural shooting position with the stock on the shoulder, the off hand supporting the barrel, and at least give the impression of looking down the scope.  To my joy, I think this figure can do a passable version of that while admittedly not perfect.  But again, I don’t think I’ve seen any figure in any scale that pulls it off flawlessly.

Nonetheless, I did say that I was frustrated a bit because it took some decent effort due to an issue that Bret noted in his review of Hunter two years ago.  The hands are very rubbery which makes the grip not so grippy.  It was more challenging the necessary to keep both hands on rifle as described.  If the hands were made of sturdier plastic, it would add a lot utility to this release. Crosshair includes the the very small DC-17 blaster, which thankfully stores in a holster to mitigate chances of it becoming lost (I have no idea where the DC-17 from my Hunter is).  If it were not for the fact that I could hook the trigger finger inside the trigger guard, I’m not sure these rubbery hands would have been able to hold the pistol at all.

As with Hunter, I love the fact that the rifle can be stored in the figure’s backpack.  The weapon splits in two.  The barrel plugs into the side of the backpack, and the body fits into slot in the middle.  But if you look the photos, you will see I wasn’t confident which way the body was supposed to face as I alternated it going from image 13 to 14.  I’m pretty sure image 14 is the correct way with the stock facing up.  I think this adds some fun “play” value to the figure.  Unlike Hunter, Crosshair thankfully comes with a swappable helmet instead of a removable helmet.  It provides much better aesthetics. With removable helmets, the bucket is often too large, or the head is too small (and sometimes both).  The rangefinder on the helmet is articulated, but, as with the shoulder armor overlays, the plastic is exceedingly soft.  I worry about these items holding up over time if there is too much use.  But since adult collectors don’t play with their toys, that’s probably not a major concern.

I mentioned that this Crosshair uses the Hunter sculpt.  I’ve read that this causes some inaccuracies as result, but I’ll be darned if these old eyes can spot them.  The biggest difference between the two armors that I can see is that the cut of the chest plate is different, but Hasbro accounted for this.  Crosshair gets a newly tooled upper torso, which is also slightly thinner which reflects the difference in the physical build of the two characters.  Well done, says I. I don’t see an issue with sculpt accuracy, but I need to be clear that I’m not saying there are none. I just can’t spot them with my increasingly worsening eyesight.  There are paint accuracy issues that do stand out to me, however.  Crosshair’s recoil pad on his right (our left) shoulder should have a red paint application.  It’s a pretty glaring omission when comparing it to the reference material, as is the fact that the helmet lacks the iconic reticle around the eye.  Not having these elements is certainly disappointing.

Overall, this is yet another fun release. My spirit soared a little finally pairing Hunter with another figure for image 27 above. The estranged brothers were first reunited on-screen and now in our collections.  I’m giving it a 9 out of 10 with the point lost for the combination of the rubbery hands and missing paint applications.  Bring on the rest of Clone Force 99.  Also, if you’re keeping track, this is now day four of the figure not being EV-9D9.
