OK, so at least for now, we’re almost at the end of the onslaught of Mandalorian retools/repaints - at least until Season 3 of The Mandalorian. We just have Axe Woves left to go. Oh yeah, and the Morak Boba Fett. Sigh.
This is the third one from The Clone Wars in the last 2 waves. We got the Maul loyalists in the Super Commando and Super Commando Captain, and now we have their former brothers and members of the new Mandalorian Resistance, the Death Watch Airborne Trooper. The quick refresher is that they used to be part of the same Death Watch team, and joined with Darth Maul in an effort to overthrow Satine Kryze’s pacifist government. But things went south when Maul beheaded Pre Vizsla and took control of the planet, so Bo-Katan Kryze split from the group and fled to fight another day. Her team maintained the Death Watch name, while those that stayed behind with Maul repainted their armor in his image, and became known as the super commandos.
That seems all well and good, but I get confused when we crossover into the live action Mandalorian series. During Season 1, we get a flashback of the Death Watch saving a village from Separatist battle droids, during which time they rescue/adopt a young Din Djarin and take him away. We learn that he was raised by the Children of the Watch, and are noted as a cultist splinter group by Bo-Katan. The rescue happens during the Clone Wars, at roughly the same time as the battle for Mandalore between Satine/Maul/Bo-Katan/Republic/Sidious occurs. So my confusion is this: are these guys, who are styled after their appearance in TCW, the same guys as the ones that rescued Din? Or had those rescuers already splintered off from the Bo-Katan’s group? They have different markings on their armor, but from what I can tell, they are the same. If that’s the case, then we’d have to chalk up the variances to the differences between the animated and live-action productions. But that doesn’t sit well with me, especially since Filoni himself had a hand in both. There would be no reason for the live action versions to be as different as they seem. If anyone has any insight, please let me know.
To this end, I included an image in the gallery of 3 figures together. The animated TCW figure is one of a few different Death Watch figures from that era. This one was sold as the pack in figure with the small Mandalorian Speeder Bike. He has much darker coloring than other versions, which look more similar to the TVC figures. The figure on the right is the live action version from The Mandalorian. The middle figure is this one, which is a realistically styled interpretation of the TCW character, so it may just be a blend of the figures on either side. I’m really not sure, and this is all giving me a terrible headache.
We’ve already covered the figure in previous repaints/retools. It’s great. Super posable, tremendous paint job, and detailed sculpting. This one differs a bit from the maul troopers in that it has the moveable rangefinder. It also has a different gauntlet assembly on the right arm. The best part is the paint job, which has a well done bit of weathering and battle damage. The worst part are the soft rubbery weapons.
There really isn’t a whole lot to complain about here, unless you are simply sick of this base sculpt and are ready for something completely different. It’s a super solid 9/10.
