Hasbro really went all in on the Mandalore aspect of The Clone Wars.  I guess they’re just taking their cue from Filoni and Favreau.  Not only was Mandalore a recurring storyline throughout the original TCW seasons, but it was revisited (as some of the best Star Wars ever) during the TCW Season 7 final arc.  It was also featured during Rebels, is central to the The Mandalorian (obviously), and promises to be revisited once more during Ahsoka.  Since Hasbro was already fashioning various male and female body tooling from The Mandalorian, it seemed easy enough to try to capture a bit of the residual love from TCW S7.

On top of the new Darth Maul and Ahsoka, as well as the recent updates to Anakin and the (terrible) Rex, Hasbro pumped out a bunch of clones such as Jesse, the 501st, and the 332nd, as well as the Super Commandos and Death Watch Mandos to do battle.  To add some depth to the ranks, we now can include the Super Commando Captain in our collections.

As a quick (and hopefully reasonably accurate) refresher, the Death Watch were the Mandalorian sect led by Pre-Vizsla and his lieutenant, Bo-Katan Kryze, that intended to preserve the warrior ways of Mandalore, and to oppose the pacifist rule of Satine Kryze.  They allied with Darth Maul to accomplish this, but things didn’t go well after Vizsla had a change of heart and lost his head.  After Maul assumed the throne of Mandalore, Bo-Katan split from the group.  Her group maintained the name (and armor color scheme) of Death Watch, while the rest of the group stayed loyal to Maul, and became the Super Commandos, styling their armor after their Sith leader.  This was taken a step further by the captains, who had horns on their helmets and shoulders, and painted their armor similar to Maul’s tattoo pattern.

This figure is a retooling of existing Mandalorian figures.  It is most similar to the Super Commando.  The main differences are the paint, the helmet, and the shoulder armor.  The paint is great, with a nice amount of wear and battle damage.  It’s an overall different scheme than that of the regular soldier, but still fits in well.  The upper body armor is painted like Maul’s tattoos, but still has a nice amount of chipping and weathering.  The sculpt differs in that the shoulders and helmet have Zabrak-inspired horns,  making this figure stand out.

Hasbro could probably keep going with this theme, to further enhance the display value of these characters.  They could make use of the female tooling (from Bo-Katan / Koska Reeves) to make more super commandos (and Death Watch).  They could also do some minor retooling and create some of the actual leader characters, like Pre-Vizsla, Gar Saxon, Rook Kast, and even Almec.  But it may be that, at least for now, Hasbro should cool it on the Mandos a bit, and move on to something else.

The figure is great, with only a few warts, like soft weapon accessories and a neck that lacks a big enough range of motion.  But like just about every offering these days, it’s pretty great.  9/10.
