Well, Hasbro managed to buck the trend and not make us wait 2 years for a figure of a character from new media. I think the last time the managed this with any bit of success was when we got the wave of figures from The Rise of Skywalker. Those actually hit shelves about 2 months before the film hit theaters, and that’s really the way it should be. But lately, whether it’s due to Disney super-secrecy, or some other reason inside LFL or Hasbro, we don’t get “preview” figures anymore. But it’s far worse, as we don’t get figures from new media until long afterwards. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that this is one of those things that is highly detrimental to the hobby. I think everyone would win if we could get back to the days when toy releases coincided with their respective source material.
Well, we got fairly close here. Hasbro managed to reveal the TVC Reva figure 2 days before the 2-episode series launch on Disney+. That was a nice nugget. Pre-orders went up the day after the announcement, and was expected by most to ship late in the year. But we got a nice surprise when the Obi-Wan Kenobi wave of figures (well, 3 of the 5 were from the show, at least), just started shipping in early July. While it missed the show’s finale by a few weeks, it’s at least still relevant. So here is the first TVC product from Obi-Wan Kenobi.
First of all, Reva is a beautiful figure. The sculpt, the outfit, the paint apps, the details…it’s all tremendous. The face - both the sculpt and the application of PhotoReal - is incredible. The likeness to Moses Ingram is top notch. I don’t think it gets any better than this at the 1:18 scale.
Reva comes with all the requisite Jedi-Level articulation, although I do feel that the range of motion wasn’t ideal for all the joints. I feel the rocker ankles are a bit underwhelming in that the feet can’t fully flex “upward” toward the shin enough, so the figure can sometimes fall short in achieving the most dynamic poses that should be possible. The shoulder “armor” is designed in such a way as to slightly hinder the upward range of the arms. It’s not devastating, and I understand the sacrifice here for aesthetic reasons. I also found the waist/torso joint to be slightly restricted when moving forward. These are all very minor gripes, but when compared to Bo-Katan or Fennec Shand, the articulation is just a tad inferior. Oh, and also like the aforementioned figures, Reva merely has swivel wrists. I get that these lady figures are often slight of frame, but Hasbro should really try to get those ball jointed wrists engineered into them. One other note about the sculpt, is the inclusion of an excellent soft goods cape. The material isn’t anything particularly noteworthy, but it’s cut very well, looks great, and does not hinder the articulation in any way.
Accessories are excellent. First there is Reva’s fully ignited double saber. It is 100% fully accurate to the HasLab lightsaber in that it doesn’t spin. However, the similarities end there, in that this 3.75” saber isn’t vaporware. [Sick burn, FACE!]. One slight negative is that Reva’s hand fits a bit too loosely around the hilt, for my taste. Also included is just the semicircular unlit hilt, which plugs into her belt. Interesting to note that the other Inquisitors stow their hilts on their backs. Reva just does her own thing, I guess. And finally, you get the two lit sabers after the hilt was snapped by Vader. This is pretty good, and I have no actual complaint. I will say that a bonus would have been a single bladed lightsaber, which Reva displays when she threatens Owen - making the diorama shot in the gallery a bit screen-inaccurate.
While I’m thrilled that Hasbro got us Reva, Vader, and Obi-Wan figures fairly quickly, it’s still hard to make an accurate diorama from the show. I don’t have Vader in hand yet, so I struggled to add photos to our gallery that were inspired by any scenes. I cobbled together the Reva/Owen stare down from a bunch of old figures and [gasp] a 5POA Fifth Brother. Otherwise, most of Reva’s scenes are either with other Inquisitors or with Vader. I thought about setting up the assault on the Jabiim hanger doors, but I decided against it because we don’t have that “non E-Web” heavy gun, nor do we yet have the Phase 2 Purge Troopers. And while I just got the Obi-Wan Kenobi (Wandering Jedi) figure, he doesn’t interact with Reva in that outfit. Black Series is getting a Jabiim Kenobi, but not TVC as of yet. So again, same story in the end. A distinct lack of figures, vehicles, or accessories to allow for accurate world-building. It is definitely frustrating.
The not-quite-perfect articulation and the swivel wrists prevent Reva from achieving a perfect score, but it’s still a great figure. 9 out of 10.
