Many collectors wanted a Migs Mayfeld character the instant he debuted as the leader of a mercenary crew during Season 1 of The Mandalorian. Naturally, Hasbro wasn’t fast enough to the draw on that one, and with limited opportunities, the window seemingly closed. To the delight of many fans of the show, Bill Burr made a return during Season 2. Hasbro heeded the call this time, and gave us the character in his Juggernaut Pilot disguise. It’s great to have the figure, and with the pending arrival of Din “Brown Eyes” Djarin in the same disguise outfit, we can set up a mini-vignette on our shelves. It would be nice to have a General Valin Hess figure, although that seems rather unlikely. In the meantime, we have Imperial officers, stormtroopers (regular and remnant), and shore troopers, to beef up the garrison scene on Morak. We’ll never get the version of the Juggernaut tank Din and Migs drove in the episode, but if you’ve got a spare Republic Tank (and who doesn’t) you could sub that in a pinch. We’ve got some skiffs (not really the ones from the show, either), but we lack the Shydopp pirates that attacked the juggernaut piloted by Migs.
Anyway, the figure is interesting because once again Hasbro has shrewdly gone for a sculpt that has repaint options. Migs Mayfeld makes heavy use of the Shore Trooper figure. But specific to this scene, Besides Migs Mayfeld, this is almost simultaneously being released as Din Djarin, with a new headsculpt, of course. But perhaps better than that for a lot of collectors, this opens the door to finally get that Imperial Swamp Trooper (mud trooper) from Solo - and of course several variants for Solo, Beckett, and the rest. That would really help flesh out the Imperial troops on Mimban. Then, we’d obviously need the Mimbanese themselves, but I digress.
This is a nice use of some existing tooling, and nice gateway to more figures that many collectors want. It looks great and is true to the armor seen on screen. The headsculpt of Migs is pretty good. I feel like it isn’t quite a dead ringer for Bill Burr, but it’s definitely good. Maybe it depends on the angle you’re looking at. As with a lot of recent figures that are repurposed today, it seems that some aspects haven’t aged well. As we discussed with the recent 4 pack of Shore Troopers, this sculpt lacks a lot of the range of motion of the limbs that we are getting used to seeing today. The elbows can just get to 90 degree bends, while the knees can’t even do that. There are no rocker ankles, either. The paint apps are pretty simple, but do feature some nice wear and weathering on the cloth parts and the armor/helmet.
One interesting aspect of this figure is that it seems Hasbro made an error, and painted a red armband on Migs’s right arm. This rank identification, seen on Shore Troopers as well as Din Djarin, is not present on Mig’s uniform. Hasbro went ahead and corrected this, and it seems both versions are out in quantity. I’m not clear as to which is the rarer type, but I’m personally more interested in the correct version - no red armband.
This figure is a Target Exclusive. As I’ve written about before, I love Target. Not only did I get the max 2 of Migs and Koska Reeves shipped to me with no issues, but I was able to score one more of each figure at a Target store. Koska was on the pegs, and Migs came from the back room. (For the record, I was shipped two figures with red armbands, while the store’s figure had no red armband.)
Rumor has it that Target was supposed to do a major reset on Sunday July 31st, but it seems your mileage may vary on that one. Not every store put their stock out, so keep trying. I’ll stick to the 9/10 I’ve been giving this sculpt. The positives are the Bill Burr headsculpt, but the not-quite-modern articulation is a bit of a bummer. It’s a shaky 9/10, but obviously still a fun figure.
