Ah, VC227.  Clearly Hasbro was looking to honor the 80’s sitcom 227 with this release.  Upon seeing the card art of Kuiil, I immediately was taken back to the time when Marla Gibbs, Jackée, and a fresh-faced Regina King would be up to their weekly hijinks.  Good times.  But enough reminiscing.  This is 2022, and these are serious times.  Russian troops are massing on the Ukraine border, China has been threatening Taiwan, North Korea continues to lob missiles into the Sea of Japan, and 900,000 Americans are now dead from COVID.  Meanwhile, Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir are about to invade your homes, so get ready for a delightful 2 weeks of distractions.

Oh, you came for a figure gallery and review?  I’ve basically forgotten how to do these things.  Also, I’m still a bit loopy as I’ve recently switched my work schedule from nights to days.  It’s a welcome change, but not the easiest adjustment to make.  Don’t be surprised if some of the images are upside down, or if I spell something uncorrectly.  So let’s get on with it.

Last week we reviewed Bo-Katan Kryze.  I gave it a 9 out of 10, with a few very picky complaints keeping the score just shy of perfect.  The second figure from that wave that we’re reviewing is Kuiil.  It’s also an outstanding figure, if not quite as dynamic and exciting as Bo-Katan.  While diminutive in stature, that didn’t stop Hasbro from pulling out all the stops.  Kuiil essentially has JLA (Jedi Level Articulation), with just about all the joints that modern TVC has to offer, including the barbell neck, ball wrists, ball waist, rocker ankles, and those new-fangled hip joints that we described in the Bo-Katan review.  Kuiil’s joints don’t quite possess the amazing range of motion that you might find in taller/slimmer figures, such as knees and elbows that bend past 90 degrees, but he isn’t exactly intended to be performing a roundhouse (ROADHOUSE) kick on some unsuspecting foe.  Nevertheless, it would be nice if his arms had greater range.

The face sculpt is great, bringing out the endearing Ugnaught visage that we have known since 1980.  The paint is a bit splotchy on the facial hair for my sample, but otherwise the Photo Real does the trick.  The paint on the rest of the figure is well done, with the drab colors that are accurate to the character’s on-screen appearance.  The helmet and goggles are done nicely, and are clearly sculpted separately from the head.  Sadly, they are not removable, which is one of the few knocks on the figure, as there was at least one scene where Kuiil took his helmet off.

For accessories, Kuiil comes with a backpack, a removable scarf, and a rifle.  The backpack fits well in the hole in the figure’s back, but that hole is pretty large and unsightly should you chose to remove the pack.  The scarf is removable, which gives you a better look at Kuiil’s outfit.  He holds the rifle nicely in his shooting hand, and can even perform an excellent THWG (Two Handed Weapon Grip.). The rifle can sling over Kuiil’s shoulder realistically.  In Photo 17 in the gallery above, Kuiil is using a tool accessory which actually is included with The Mythrol.  It would have been nice if this figure had a tool or two as part of the accessory load out.

A few minor issues with the figure hold it back from perfection.  I would have liked a removable helmet/goggle combination, as well as a tool or two.  Also, the slightly limited range of motion of some of the joints isn’t ideal.  None of this is a deal breaker, but like Bo-Katan, Kuiil falls shy of perfection.  Subjectively, it’s not as exciting as Bo-Katan, but it’s still always great to receive a newly sculpted alien, especially from an OT species.  Kuiil gets a 9, but a lesser 9 than Miss Kryze.
