Editor’s Note: We thank LitzkyPR for providing this sample to Banthaskull.
Collectors are a miserable bunch, and will always find something to complain about. Here we have a Walmart Exclusive figure that retails for $17.99. Both of those are certainly worth some negative energy from our community. There are two indisputable facts at play: (1) Walmart is the worst, and (2) nobody wants to feel like they’re getting ripped off. Right off the bat, these facts should leave a bad taste in collector mouths about this figure. But Banthaskull is here to allay your concerns. First of all, this figure is amazingly still readily available (even with a small algorithmic price drop!) on Walmart.com (Sponsored). Secondly, the extra $5 is easily accounted for with the amazing accessories included in the package, as you will see by reading further.
Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) is the first figure that uses the given name of the character, and is appropriately stamped on the card in the name pill. The bubble is large, so as to accommodate all of the goodies held within. As such, there isn’t much real estate for a character portrait. Hasbro chose a rather low-res and dark image of a shiny Mando, so it’s a bit underwhelming. As much as I love TVC, I’m not all that obsessive about the cardbacks, but I felt this was worth mentioning. I think they could have done better with this. But it does get the job done. A more newsworthy issue is encountered when you flip the card over to the backside. There you will find “VC177” printed at the top right. Unfortunately, another Walmart exclusive figure, the Incinerator Trooper (which will be reviewed very soon), is also numbered VC177.
Once you get past the card and rip that clear plastic prison open, you’ll be treated to an outstanding figure and a ton of phenomenal accessories. We’ll get to those goodies in a bit, but let’s start with the figure. It is a heavily retooled version of VC166. It enjoys all the amazing articulation and posability of VC166, although I do wish Hasbro would have added rocker ankles. But aside from that, Din has everything else going for him, even with the elbows and knees both bending past 90 degrees.
The paint applications are tremendous. This figure is meant to represent Din after the skirmish in the streets of Nevarro in the final episode of Season 1. Mando was beaten up pretty good in that one, and his Beskar armor took some heat (so to speak) as well. The figure’s armor doesn’t have any kind of physical damage sculpted in, but Hasbro did apply an impressive amount of high quality painted damage, dirt, and scoring. The armor itself was given a silvery finish that is very convincing. It’s not vac-metal, but it looks bright and shiny underneath all the grease, grime, and carbon scoring. The sculpt also reveals the whistling bird gauntlet on his left forearm, which (correctly) doesn’t exist on VC166.
This figure includes a soft plastic cape. It does slightly inhibit the poses, notably when trying to make Mando kneel. But if you’re patient, you can work around it. On the plus side, it’s just long enough to act as a support for some action poses that might otherwise cause the figure to tip over, as in image 11 in the gallery above. One other negative with the sculpt is that the shoulder armor reduces the range of motion of the shoulder joints. The figure is barely able to raise its arms to 90 degrees, much like Randy in A Christmas Story.
So now on to the accessories. Mando comes with his trusty blaster, which fits well in the holster as well as in his hand. He also has the Jawa-vaporizing sniper rifle, which he can grip convincingly with both hands, or stow in the notch on the back of his bandolier. Mando also comes with a jetpack, which can fit into a rectangular notch in his back. Hasbro did a nice job here of putting the notch off center, so as not to be hindered by the cape. In fact, a slight shift of the cape easily covers the hole when he’s not sporting the jetpack.
One fantastic inclusion here is the “ice cream maker” camtono, the container which was presented to Mando by The Client after he successfully delivered The Child. Hasbro, of course, gave us a camtono accessory with Wilrow Hood in 2009. But that one was a simple piece of plastic. Here, the camtono can have the cover removed, and also has one side that opens like a ramp. In the show, the camtono actually had 3 side doors that opened like ramps. So technically, this isn’t exactly like that, but it’s still pretty incredible for a tiny accessory at this scale. The fact that the camtono opens allows you to place two other accessories inside. Din Djarin also includes a stack of Beskar ingots, as well as a single ingot. Both accessories are branded with tiny Galactic Empire symbols. Neat!!
And finally, hidden behind the starburst bubble sticker is an alternate unmasked swappable head. Despite early reports of a horrible sculpt, I have to say that I feel this is a really nice likeness to Pedro Pascal. His hair is mussed, because, well, he should have a bad case of helmet head since that is the way. The PhotoReal is well done, including the facial stubble and mustache. This is inspired from the short scene where IG-11 performs first aid on Din’s central processing unit. While not exactly accurate to that scene, I’m glad Hasbro opted to pass on making the bloody wounds on the head and face, as I think it makes the figure a bit more versatile. We don’t know yet if Pedro Pascal will have any more scenes like that, so we’ll have to see.
Well, that’s it. That just about covers it…wait, what? Oh yeah. First ever 3.75” scale The Child / Baby Yoda / Kevin is included. He’s freakin’ adorable! He’s got ball jointed shoulders and neck, which give just enough opportunities for some cute possibility. He’s more or less a tiny saltshaker, but let’s face it, the actual on screen character isn’t exactly doing gymnastics, so this is perfect.
So forget your annoyance with Walmart. Order it online now. Forget the price hike. Consider this a two-pack, or just a super-accessorized figure. It’s totally worth it. Great figure. Great accessories. Great everything. A few nits just to keep Hasbro honest, but since we gave VC166 a 10/10, we will do the same here. Get this figure. Get many of them. Then when you’re done, get a few more.
