Yesterday, we reviewed the Carbonized Remnant Stormtrooper. We discussed the current collecting environment and why Hasbro may have decided to drop this wave upon the community. The gist is that they needed something quick, but different, to put on the shelves as Season 2 was about to premiere, and they had to account for the needs of their biggest brick and mortar retail partner in order to pull it off. Is it what we asked for? No. But it’s better than putting up a big goose egg for Season 2. And apparently, people couldn’t get enough of them. Unless there’s a big stash of replenishments coming down the pipeline, these “terrible” figures may have set a record for fastest TVC wave to sell out.
The stormtrooper ended up with a pearlescent finish that was kind of neat. It definitely made it look weird next to a regular storm trooper, but if kept separate, you could convince yourself that they’re supposed to look like that as they head into battle - bringing sparkly terror upon their awestruck enemies.
Here we have the Imperial Death Trooper. The original figure upon which this repaint is based, was first released in the dreadful Walmart Black Series at the end of 2016/early 2017, for Rogue One. It was then repacked as VC127. Now it gets the carbonized treatment as it makes its return to Walmart exclusivity, this time, as an unnumbered TVC variant.
The card artwork is completely different from VC127, and this time falls under the banner of The Mandalorian. This effort makes it unique in the wave, as the other figures do not change the card art from their respective previous releases. The card stock itself seems pretty sturdy, as it’s folded over for double the thickness. It sports the flashy chrome finish that we know from the recent convention exclusive 3-packs.
The figure, as stated, is the identical sculpt to the existing Death Trooper figure. Like the Stormtrooper, the carbon treatment isn’t really that obvious until you hold the figures side by side. The original is a definite deep black. This one has a bronzey finish. Again, it could pass for a regular trooper, unless you see them together. So the review here pretty much fits the same pattern as yesterday’s. If you’re in need of some Death Trooper figures, these may suffice, just be careful about mixing them on the shelf, because they’ll look out of place.
