Another repaint, here.  This one is again a barely referenced old EU character, Darth Vader’s astromech.  According to Wookieepedia, the droid makes an appearance in a 2005 novel, but is not named.  It also can be seen in a couple of comics, but the coloring is inconsistent.  Hasbro is credited with naming the astromech for the first time canonically, which of course is not canon anymore.

Sadly, as most collectors know, the ROTS-style Jedi Starfighters do not house a full astromech figure.  Vader’s starfighter (itself the 284th repaint of the fighter sculpt), is part of a neat little EU/off-screen vignette with Vader and R4-K5.  It’s one of those figures that you assume must exist, plus it’s black, and belongs to Vader.  So even though it’s kind of a crappy choice for a figure, it still manages to be somewhat desirable.

It uses the ROTS R4-G9, which is still pretty good, although it’s since been surpassed as the best astromech base mold.  This one has a well-hidden feature where the third leg retracts by turning the dome.  It fits entirely into the cylindrical body, while the dome can continue to turn and click, facing any direction you wish.  It also has working wheels on all three feet.  The detailing is solid, as are the paint apps, even if they are fairly simple.

Again, nothing spectacular here in the final waves of figures from The Saga Collection, but still a neat character to use for your off-screen adventures (if you know what I mean).  One more thing to note:  Since this is an EU figure, the stand that is included is incorrectly labeled as Revenge of the Sith for the source.  It really should just have the generic Star Wars logo used for other EU figures.

R4-K5 gets a 6/10.  A solid, no-nonsense astromech.  Not too much to complain about.
