It’s a repaint! A good one, but still a repaint. This is Commander Appo. Although not named on screen in Revenge of the Sith, he is the leader of the group of 501st Legion clones that confronts Bail Organa when he parks his car at the Jedi Temple. There were no markings, pauldrons, or any other special items that distinguished Appo from other clones in the unit. When Zett Jukassa emerged on the platform, he wounded Appo and killed a few other clones before finally being killed himself, allowing Organa to flee the scene so he could die later when Alderaan got blowed up.
Appo also appeared in The Clone Wars animated series. For a time, he had a distinguishing arrow symbol on his helmet, which apparently was a Filoni Easter egg that was a reference to his work on The Last Airbender. It doesn’t seem that he wore a pauldron at any point. It is possible that this figure was misnamed, and should be Commander Bow. Bow was released as a named figure as a two-pack with Darth Vader during the Target Order 66 subline. That figure sports a flip visor on the helmet, which apparently Bow never wore in the comics in which he is featured. It seems that Hasbro got their signals crossed a couple of times with these guys.
The figure is a repaint of the rather excellent ROTS #41 Phase II Clone Trooper. As such, it’s an excellent figure, and stands up well today. The pauldron accessory is added, and can be removed, giving you a true Commander Appo (or any other generic 501st trooper). He’s got the standard super-articulation for the day (which many TSC figures do not have), and comes with the pauldron, a blaster, the figure stand, and the mini-hologram.
It’s a good figure, even if it’s not screen accurate out of the package. Remove the pauldron, and get on with your life. Or don’t. Either way, it gets a 7/10
