For the last review, I lamented the repaint/repack heavy Saga Collection. More clones, more holographs, and more repacks of 4 year old figures. But Hasbro is certainly capable of putting out a worthwhile repaint for a character that might otherwise stand zero chance of getting a figure.
R5-J2 is an example of a repaints that should make most collectors happy. The Imperial astromech can be spotted in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment as Darth Vader and Moff Jerjerrod walk and talk in the DS2 hangar bay:
If you continue watching the scene, you’ll see a similar R5 on the opposite side, just a few seconds later:
So which one is R5-J2? I don’t know for sure. I usually use Angelfire as a source for droid stuff, but even that site seems to be inconclusive as to which is the correct droid, or if Hasbro even got it right in the first place. Either way, the shots are so fleeting on screen that it probably shouldn’t matter.
This is a repaint of the TSC 032 R5-D4 figure which was released only a few waves prior. It’s a good base figure for R5-units, even carrying forward the “bad motivator” which raises and lowers as you twist the dome. It’s also got a removable antenna (don’t lose it!) and removable 3rd leg.
Hasbro did a nice job giving us an all new background astromech to help fill out your DS2 dioramas, so it’s hard to complain. We gave R5-D4 an 8, and will do the same here. This is how repaints should be done.
