So Chris woke me out of my holiday slumber to do work. That guy sucks. This will be somewhat short and to the point.
Battle Packs were my favorite “expression” from the height of collecting - about 2006-2012 (before 6” ruined our lives). I loved how you could get a set of 3+ figures, often with extra accessories and sometimes with larger environmental pieces, and even occasionally vehicles. The main format had started out with 5 figures, but got hit by economics, reducing basic battle packs to 3 figures by the time 2009 rolled around. This one included 3 figures that didn’t exactly interact with each other at any point, but they did help flesh out your Endor displays.
The Luke figure was simply a repaint plus accessory kit bash/upgrade from a couple of previous figures from 2006 (TSC) and 2007 (TAC). It was pretty good for the time, but obviously didn’t really age well. While it is super-articulated, the standards of the day left it without rocker ankles and ball jointed hips, waist, and wrists. Also the joints are bulbous and rather unsightly. The figure can’t do a ton of good posing, as you’re left with the ol’ kickstand lunging move as one of your few options. Nevertheless, the accessories helped make this figure a winner. Aside from the poncho, helmet, belt, blaster, and lightsaber, Luke also sports his soft goods vest and belt from his previous Tatooine mission. While the sheer volume of accessories is impressive, it has a bunch of inaccuracies. The belt/holster/blaster is wrong and is essentially superfluous. Luke didn’t wear a holster or carry a blaster to Endor. And the Tatooine vest underneath also should have been jettisoned in favor of his Death Star II outfit. [Correctly pointed out in the comments that Luke does wear this vest when he reveals to Leia that she is his sister, and then it’s gone when he surrenders himself.] Most of this was corrected with the upgrade we got with VC198. However, that figure was frustrating to many (not Chris), for having the molded helmet. VC198 was also released prior to the jump in standard articulation, so it lacks the aforementioned improvement that are standard today. Anyway, the figure is pretty good, and perhaps holds some value due to the removable helmet, if you desired such an option.
Warok is interesting because it is the only version of this character in the modern line. Like Luke, it comes with a ton of accessories, and allows for a lot of display options. The sculpt itself is pretty good, but is outdone by later Ewok bucks. This one doesn’t have elbows, for example. The best part are the accessories. The removable hood/pouch works well, and the pouch holds 3 tiny arrows. These arrows are easy to lose, so be careful, you animals! Warok can’t really hold a single arrow in his wide c-grip hands, but he can hold all 3 as a bunch. He can also hold his bow, although he can’t really pose with the bow in a shooting stance. The big draw is the hang glider. Warok fits in the harness nicely, and grips the steering mechanism well. There are 2 rock “bombs” that hook (precariously) onto the handlebar. If you have a way to make the figure “fly”, it looks really good. It otherwise doesn’t look like much when on the “ground.” Overall, it’s a nice item.
Colonel Dyer was released in this set after it was dropped from a previous battle pack - probably for cost reasons. The figure itself is pretty subpar, as it is limited to 10 POA, with swivel elbows. The hat is non-removable (not particularly upsetting), and the hands are gloved. Dyer comes with an E-11 blaster. He can’t do a whole lot, but it’s neat to have the Ben Burtt / Wilhelm scream guy from the shield generator room.
Overall, it’s a decent set. It was great in 2009, and still has some merit today, even if it’s showing its age. Luke has been surpassed, and should be updated. Warok could be better, but I’m not complaining - it’s a good setup here. Dyer is a bad figure, and Hasbro really needs to take the current officer base (with improvements to the elbow and knee range of motion) and give us some imperial officers with the black uniforms.
