This figure has been thoroughly stomped into near irrelevance with the recent release of the tremendous Jedi Destiny set. Of course, it was basically already beaten pretty severely by VC87. At the time this figure was available, it was pretty good. The figure is super-articulated and nicely posable. The sculpt, however, has some issues with the bulbous joints, particularly at the shoulders, elbows, and knees. 2007 was still in the early (not actually earliEST days, but still early) of ball jointed super-articulation, and Hasbro was still working on their sculpting techniques. Today, ball joints are much more well-hidden within the sculpt so as to not negatively affect the aesthetic of the figure - and the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker from the aforementioned Jedi Destiny set is a prime example.
The use of soft goods for the outer part of the Jedi ensemble is questionable. It’s a commendable effort, and Hasbro has often experimented with different looks and materials over the years. Some work out for the long-term, some don’t. This didn’t. The soft goods end up being more distracting than anything else, and kind of look like Luke is wearing a terry cloth tunic. The new figure uses plastic sculpting for these robes, but puts in a well designed bit of soft goods to assist with the hip range of motion, without distracting from the overall aesthetic.
The head sculpt is also poor, although not as bad as Luke faces have turned out historically. The eye paint is unfortunate, and has Luke kind of rolling his eyes up and back into his skull. Maybe it’s meant for him to be staring up in horror at the approaching rancor. But he’s got a PVT Leonard Pyle vibe going on there. The new Luke head is pretty excellent. It’s about as good as we can expect for the 3.75” scale. This one doesn’t quite cut it.
Sculpt, articulation, soft goods, face paint application…everytihng is outdone - by a mile.- by the new figure. But all that said, the figure isn’t actually bad. It’s just showing some age. It doesn’t have to be tossed aside, as was the case for the old POTF2 Saelt-Marae when the TVC version became available. You can still use this in your displays. Personally, I think it works fine, particularly in the grip of the rancor, where the worst parts of the figure can be concealed by the beast’s giant claw. Nah, you could still get away with using it in a display if you wanted, but it is thoroughly outclassed by the new figure.
All that said, besides the fact that the figure can still be usable, it comes with the bone accessory that Luke used to escape the rancor’s attempt to eat Luke. That also helps with the case to still have it in your collection.
Oh yeah, it also comes with the coin.
