There’s not a ton to say about this figure, as it has been beaten down by the more recent TBS Phase 1 #04 Biggs Darklighter. But perhaps it wasn’t completely obliterated. There may be minor value here for some collectors.
First, the figure is a huge improvement over the previous POTF2 version. Sure it was 1998, but by now, that figure should never see the light of day on your shelf. This one is at least passable as a static display piece, but the limited articulation really puts it behind the 8 ball. You can put it in the background of a pilots briefing or a hangar setting, but if you’re going to feature a Biggs Darklighter figure you’ll want to use the aforementioned TBS1 version.
HOWEVER, there is one small detail that keeps this from being completely lost to action figure history. The TBS Darklighter figure, for whatever reason, has a pilot suit that is painted more of a pink (or salmon, as Chris is wont to call it) than a proper orange. So if the color of the newer (better) figure bothers you, you might want to consider this one instead. You could kick it up a notch by swapping helmets, because the TBS helmet has more accurate detailing on it. More accurate, that is, but not completely accurate. The real film helmet has another black and yellow checkerboard pattern on the lower part of the back of the helmet, and this is missed on both figures’ helmets.
The other reason to get this, as with any of the 2007 TAC figures, is for the coin. Hasbro also selected Rebel Pilot Biggs Darklighter to serve as one of the 12 gold foil / gold coin chase variants. If you’re into the coins, like I was at the time, you’d need to get both versions.
So the flight suit color and the 2 coin variants are the reasons to keep this figure in mind, even though it’s not very good by today’s standards. Otherwise, go with the 2013 TBS version. If Hasbro was ever going to do an update, they’d probably use a the new Luke Skywalker pilot body from the Jedi Destiny 3-pack as a base, but with a retool to make it a bit taller (or they could just keep the TBS body.) Proper orange suit color, completed helmet details, and FACE! would make it the perfect Biggs Darklighter.
